: Front Shock Installation Question

I purchased a set of KYB 4515 to go along with my newly installed Moog 6308 coils...

The stock height spindles are both installed.
They came part of Ricks SSBC front disk conversion kit....

Bolted the top of the shock to the frame....wings are about an inch shy the LCA...

I guess I can remove the spindle from upper ball joint and lower the LCA back down....really dont want to do that...

The Gabriel Red Ryder shocks that I pulled off the car are much shorter....are the 4515 just too long?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance
Scott

Ok maybe im missing something here...your saying the shock is to long?? Why cant you just compress the shock a little by hand and hold it there while you bolt it on. I put new KYB gas-adjusts on mine last month and that is all i had to do.

Take them off the frame and bolt the bottoms in first.

or use your floor jack and compress them a little and bolt them in

I know...I was expecting just to bolt em up ...

yes..it is almost as if the shock rod is too long.

I did try compressing in on my work bench...the rod didnt budge..I'll try it again, or with the floor jack

Thanks for the feedback.. graemlins/beers.gif

The gas-a-justs a VERY high pressure shocks.

The right way to put them in is to leave the shipping strap on, bolt the bottom in, cut the strap, and carefully guide the top of the shock thru the hole as it extends.

Once it's all the way out, they a B*ITCH to compress again.

Worse comes to worse, get some strong line and redo the shipping straps, take em to a shop with a press, compress em, and tie em down again.

Welcome back, Scot, haven't heard from u for awhile!

Hey Jim!
Oddly enuff, the shocks were shipped fully extended (no strap)...

Good news is...I climbed under the thing this am and I was able to compress it by pushing up on the shock bottom....
The bad news is...I cant get get the bolts into their holes ...hand is in the way...I'll try my small floor jack later

Thanks man...good to be back....waaaaaay too much workin over the last few weeks..

Thanks for the info!

that's weird... I've used umpteen sets of those things, and never seen them shipped extended. Was the box factory sealed when you got it?

Anyhows, as long as you can get em to compress, you'll eventually get a bolt in there.

wait a cotton picking minute... run down to the hardware store, get 2 bolts long enough to reach... screw em in, and use them to pull the shock up. Once it's up and tight, swap in the short bolts one at a time.

Looks good, now i see why you had trouble trying to compress the shocks by hand. For some reason i was picturing you had the car on a lift. Mine was on a lift when i put mine in so i could get a lot more "ummmph" into it when i compressed my shocks by hand. I think i sometimes take the lift for granted.

True, lifs do give you alot more leverage potential... Still not sure what happened to my shipping straps ...

Went to visit my motor at the shop that is doing the install...I need to do some preliminary cleanup/detailing b4 she goes in....
The headers are in decent shape...lil rusty...going to pull em and have them Jet-Hot'd

I need a lift baaad
