a large bolt fell out of my car (uh oh) and I can't figure out where it goes. it's making me crazy cuz it's a really big bolt. it's 5 inches long with thread on the last inch. anyone got any places I shouold check for missing bolts?

Check you motor mounts and lower a-arms. Maybe starter bolt?

oops, forgot that entirely. shaft is 3/8 bolt head is 5/8. I'm beginning to think lower A-arm. I'll have to check tomorrow though, it's a little late. thanks for the quick replies guys.

Head bolts don't fall out, unless there was no gravity, (or it was left out of the car following some work) and all of the long ones are under the valve covers, so unless you have a hole in the top of your valve cover it didn't come off your engine.

You have a choice of starter bolts, (not 5/8"), subframe bolts (also not 5/8" head and not 5" long), lower control arm bolts, (might be 5/8" been a while since I fooled with them), motor mount pivot bolts (think these are 9/16" head), alternator pivot bolt (at least on a 69 style moount but this is a 9/16" head bolt), maybe a rear spring front bushing bolt (but theres no way for this to fall out in one piece)

Those are all the long bolts I can think of on a Camaro. I'd bet it's the starter bolt though.

What side did it fall out on?

I recently changed a thermostat in my 67. One of the bolts holding the water head was approx. 3 inches long. I was amazed when I saw this myself. Try checking there.

I've been helping KZ convert his '69 to power steering, and that sounds close to the size of the bolts that hold the steering box against the subframe. Good luck finding its home!

heading to school now in my other car, I'll check when I get home. I think it's the lower A-arm because I just installed dropped spindles and disc brakes and it's a new bolt. It could be the starter bolt, but i don't think so, because it was really clean and I went through a really bad oil leak that sprayed most of the engine. I'll have to check that after teh a-arm. thanks for the quick replies guys.

could it be the Balancer bolt? there about 4" long and pretty thick...

on your recent install check to see if you used the new bolts or if you have new ones with a old one in place. you might have used an old one and left the new one on the rails somewhere and if finally fell off. good luck in finding the plae it goes to

i would not count anything out at this point,gravity or no gravity,ive seen some strange things ,bolts,sockets,wrenches (not my work of course)fall out of car months after work was done.i new that wrench had to be somewhere!. any way i always thought starter bolts were 9/16.have ever you thought this bolt was picked up off the street and not from your car afterall.if it was control arm bolt i think you would know real quick

ok... what would happen if the a-arm bolt came loose?, and what's the easiest way to check the starter, from under or above car?

A-arm bolts have a 3/4" head, so that's not what you've got. Can't remember offhand what the hex size is for a starter bolt, but you can tell quickly by looking at the starter from the bottom - only two bolts attach it, one on each side of the nose, straight up into the block flange; one is longer than the other.
