I have a freind that converted from power steering & a column shift to manual steering & a floor shift in a 68 Camaro, he used a 69 manual box, & a column from a 67 Camaro, now when steers there is a loud POP & you can see the firewall & the column move it does this once when cutting to the left or right & then when cutting back.A new rag joint was used. The noise doesn't come from the steering box. What has he done wrong? What does he need to do to correct this

The steering column may be bent?
You might need to shim the column so it is straighter. Maybe loosen the box on the frame and line it up to the column better.
Just guessing.

Sounds like the rag joint is misaligned (column shaft not concentric with the steering gear shaft), or isn't properly spaced (the fiber portion should be flat, not distorted), so the safety pins are grounding out on the upper flange. Some guys buy new rag joints and don't know that the plastic spacer collars on the safety pins are supposed to be removed after the joint is installed (they're there to help establish proper spacing/alignment during assembly); that's why they have a tab with a hole in it - to grab them with a hook and yank them out after the joint is assembled.
