I am getting ready to by some new mags. Would it be safe to have 3 1/2 inch backspacing on the front and back rims. was a 4 1/2 inch bolt circle standard on 69 camaros? i think i am going with the weld racing pro star wheels for my 69. 15x6in front and15x8's in the back.

That backspacing will work and you could go more depending on how big of tire you want, 4" in the front might actually be better. Bolt pattern is 4 3/4".

Factory backspacing is 4.5".

Forgive my ignorance, but what is backspacing?

Also, I have 255/60R15 on the rear, with 165R15 on the front. Is this a good combo? The front tires look like bicycle tires compared to the back.

HDOG,

This is how you measure backspacing. You put a flat piece of metal across the back of your wheel and you measure how far it is from the metal to the BACK of the mounting surface of the wheel where the lugnut holes are. In effect you are measuring how "DEEP" the wheel is from the "BACK" of the wheel. Thus a wheel with 4 1/2" backspacing (stock backspacing) WILL NOT be as deep from the FRONT part of the wheel than the same size wheel with only 3 inch back spacing.

HDOG. Try 225/60-15 on the front. You will be much happier with them.

I finally got my new mags.Would 275/60/15s be to wide for back tires with 3 1/2 inch backspacing? Would 255/60/15s be better? Thanks for all your help so far!

275/60-15 BARELY make it with 4.5" backspacing. I think with any less backspacing the 275's would rub on the lip of the wheelwell where the wheelwell molding lives.

255's MIGHT work but I would test the fit first with that backspacing.
