: new tires and wheels sizes
Pete Feb 12th, 02, 04:50 PM I just ordered some new Boyds, they said 9.5" will fit in the rear and 8" in the front tire size for the rear is P275/40ZR-17 and 245/45ZR-17 in the front, I have a 2" lowering kit all the way around.
Will i have any problems?
1968camaro123 Feb 13th, 02, 02:51 PM What backspacing? If it's 5.5 on the rear and 4.5 on the front, yeah.

I also modified the shock brachet inboard of its existing location
I'm not sure what the exact back spacing is, that was determined thru Boyd when they ordered them.

Just curious on what backspacing is? I see 5.5, 4.5 etc...what measurement is that? inches?
MarkM Feb 15th, 02, 05:54 AM Moving your shock inboard will do nothing to add clearance. 17" wheels clear the bottom of the shock completly. Backspacing means everything when fitting wheels. You can't even fit a 7" wheel in the rear if it has the wrong backspcacing.
Mike 4.5 and 5.5 is distance in inches. Backspacing is a measurement from the wheel mounting surface to the lip of the wheel, on the backside of the wheel. Hence backspacing.

Neuss69 Feb 16th, 02, 11:14 AM I have a 69 conv and am also looking at putting 255/40 on 17x8" wheels up front and 275/40 on 17x9.5" on the rear. What is the best way to verify the correct backspacing? How can I be sure if 4.5 on the front and 5.5 on the rear is enough? I don't want to roll or alter the wheel fender either. I am leaving the drums on the rear and am changing the fronts to the 13" Bear TRACK disc system. Any help would be greatlt appreciated!!

MarkM Feb 16th, 02, 01:42 PM In my opinion an 8" wheel with only 4.5" bs, is not enough, the wheel sticks out to far. I'd go with at least 5". I'm running disc in the front similar to the Baer brakes, and I went with a 8" wheel with 5.25" bs. 5.5" bs almost fit but not quite, it hit the steering arm. 5.5" bs for the rear will work on the rear, two guys I know are running that same size tire/wheel with no problems.

Neuss69 Feb 17th, 02, 08:11 AM Great! Thanks MarkM!
1968camaro123 Feb 17th, 02, 03:39 PM Mark-
You ended up going with 5.25 inch backspacing? Do you think that it would be better if I went with 5 inch backspacing instead of 4.5? I'd go with 5.25 but I have front drums. Do you think that would give me more tire clearance or would there be more of a chance that it would rub?
Thanks,
Donnie
1968camaro123 Feb 17th, 02, 03:43 PM MarkM-
Also, are you planning on running a spacer on either the front or rear?
Thanks,
Donnie
MarkM Feb 17th, 02, 04:18 PM Donnie, if I were you I'd probably just go with the 5" bs. A rotor adds about 1/4" thickness. Even if you switch to disc in the future, you'll be fine. I don't plan on running any spacers, that's why I got that backspacing. I could have requested any backspacing. These are made to order wheels, not what ever they want to provide like American racing wheels.
1968camaro123 Feb 18th, 02, 06:17 AM Mark- Okay, I'm gonna just go with 5 inch bs. Just out of curiosity, what difference will that make in tire clearance? Basically, I'm plannin on running a 245-40-17 or a 245-45-17 tire on the front. Do you think this will make it easier or harder than if I had 4.5 inch bs? And yeah, I'm planning on getting disk brakes by the end of this summer. I might do the vette swap too.
Thanks again,
Donnie
MarkM Feb 18th, 02, 07:39 AM More backspacing gets the edge of the tire further from the outside of the inner fender. Which is were it can rub if your car is low enough. But this also puts the tire closer to the frame, which can rub when turning sharp corners. Go with 5" bs, you'll be fine.
1968camaro123 Feb 18th, 02, 08:50 AM Okay, thanks again Mark. I'd be so screwed without you dude.
Thanks again,
Donnie
1968camaro123 Feb 18th, 02, 09:31 AM Mark, final question, I promise...Should I got with a 235 series tire or a 245 for the front?
Thanks again,
Donnie
MarkM Feb 19th, 02, 05:15 AM When you have a 245/40 tire, the 40 is considered the series. The 245 is the width. I'm going with a 255/40. You should be fine if you want the wider 245.
1968camaro123 Feb 19th, 02, 02:46 PM Okay thanks again.

MagnusRS68 Feb 25th, 02, 12:43 AM Im just curious with that size 17x9.5" with 5.5 bss. Is that with rear drumbrakes or discbrakes?
Im planning to buy a new set of wheels and i think ill go with 17x8" 5.25" bss in front(discbrakes, upgrading to Baer) and 17x9.5" with 5.5 bss in rear, i have drumbrakes in the rear now, but planning to change those to baer discbrakes aswell. Should i have more bss in the rear then?
Thanks
Magnus
MarkM Feb 25th, 02, 04:37 AM Magnus, I'm running disc brakes on the rear as well. I went with 5.5" bs. I don't think there is really that much difference between the thickness of a drum and the thickness of a rotor, probably not even 1/4". You could probably go with the 5.75" bs, and if you get a little rubbing, add a small spacer.
MagnusRS68 Feb 25th, 02, 05:18 AM MarkM: Okey. But im trying to fit Cragar S/S wheels and they dont make custom Bss on their wheels. so 17x9.5" with 5.5 bss is the only they got.
I allready have problems with my front with 7" wide with 3.5" bss. But that is the sama as 8" with 4.5" bss, just that with 8" i got more wheel inboard.
But if the rotor does not add more than 1/4" they will fit in my rear with 5.5 bss.
Thanks
Magnus
MarkM Feb 25th, 02, 06:58 AM Yeah, you'll be fine with 5.5" bs in the rear. What are you options in bs for the 8" front wheel? 5.25 bs will work fine for the front, that's what I'm getting.
I already have my tires, I'm just waiting for the wheels to arrive, which should be here anyday now. Then I'll know for sure how well they fit, and I'll get some pics too.
MagnusRS68 Feb 25th, 02, 10:45 AM Cragars 17x8" wheels only comes in 3,5" and 4,5" bss. And with 4,5" bss the wheel will stick out 4,5" as my 7" does now. And thats with the wheels overall width. 7" is overall 8" and the 8" is about 9". Thats the flange that add that extra.
I asked 3 wheelshops, one in sweden and 2 by mail, and ive asked cragar if they do other bss, but they dont they said =(
I really want the cragar wheels. But it is leaning to make a change to AM racing. I want the 5 spoke retro look.
I'll try to get some pictures of my wheels in the front aswell tomorrow. I might get more clearance if i use a 215 tire instead of 235 as i have now.

1968camaro123 Feb 25th, 02, 04:14 PM MarkM- Could you do me a HUGE favor and send me an e-mail at uraceulose@aol.com when you get your rims installed?
Thanks alot,
Donnie
P.S. Try and post some pics too!! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
MarkM Feb 25th, 02, 04:37 PM That's to bad that they don't make more backspacing on the wheels you want.
Donnie I'll let you know when I get the wheels on. I'm hoping they come any day now.
1968camaro123 Feb 25th, 02, 06:17 PM Okay thanks alot.
