I m doing a front end rebuild and asembly job for a guy who wants to fit some 18 inch rims (wheels)to his 68,and run a 1 1/2 to 2 inch drop.I have found him some 18x8 rims with a 150mm (5.9 inch Back Spacing ).

Is there any way these can be made to work?

Mark M your input would be valuble as you seem to have fiddled extensivly with Big Diameter wheels .

By the way Its nice to see you guys are still going strong and helping out with problems wish i had the time to hop on the forum more often.

That's really to much backspacing. The most backspacing you can go in the front is about 5.25", but there is a little difference between drum and disc brake applications. I put a wheel with 5.5" of backspacing on the front of mine before and it hit the steering arm/tie rod. It might of worked if I were to gring on the steering arm some, but I just got my wheels with 5.25" bs to be on the safe side. I think you'll need about a 1" spacer. I think a spacer that big needs to be a bolt on type. Get a "Truckin" magazine, there are several companies that sell bolt on spacers, for not to much cash.

The back will be pretty close, but the tire will probably hit the inner fender. I could of gotten away with 5.75" bs, but I went with 5.5" to be safe. I figured since my Hotchkis springs have a rubber front bushing the spring may move side to side a little more then with just poly or solids. You could probably just add longer studs in the rear, and about a half inch spacer. I added longer studs when I put disc on the rear. Napa sells a wide viriety of studs.

Good luck, I'd like to see some pics when done. What kind of wheels are they?

Mark,

Was your front rubbing with 18" or 17" diameter wheels? And what is you tire sizes front and rear? pdq67 pdq67

Paul, the wheel was hitting the tie rod with a 17" wheel. I wasn't thinking about an 18" wheel. You might be able to run more b/s in the front with an 18 since it might clear the tie rod.

I will be making the Spacers myself if he does get the wheels ,as we now have a 20 to 1 Exchange with youre dollar buy the time it gets to our door here.
