View Full Version : Choosing rims and tires

Hi all. Well, here's another one of those "what's the biggest I can go" posts. I'm trying to choose rims and tires that best fit my "pro-touring" minded '72 Camaro. Of course I'd like to fit the biggest tires and rims possible 'cuz that looks cool, but my main goals are handling and traction, with handling taking priority. I originally planned on running 17x8 or 17x9's 245 or 255 50's up front and 17x9.5's or 17x10's 275 50's out back. What do you guys think? I really don't know a thing about tires and wheel size (obviously), so let me have it for my ignorance. Next question: I've seen Z28's and Corvettes with all four wheels and tires being the same sizes. Is there an advantage to this? Any and all information would be very helpful. Also, any websites that have info on max rim and tire sizes for specific year Camaros? Thanks guys.

Well, here's the specific combo I want to run. Saw this on a '71 Camaro in a Super Chevy magazine last year. They had the same Vette Brakes Camaro Max Performance suspension kit as the one I'm running, and here's the HUGE combo they ran: 17x9.5's with Yokohama A032R 275/40ZR17's up front with 17x11's and A032R 315/35ZR17's out back. The article didn't mention anyting about any mods having to be done, but have to assume they had special offsets and backspacing. What do you guys think?

there was a mag awhile back (4 months maybe?) that talked about the biggest wheels and tires you could fit under all sorts of old Chevys. I don't remember which it was or any other info, but if you can find the past few issues of each, you may be able to find the article. Good luck.

I read i don't remember where... that the biggest tire size that fit first gen camaro's without cutting anything on your car, are front 255 and rear 285 .

Boodlefoof, I think you are talking about a Chevy High Performance issue a few months back. I still have it somewhere around here...

Yeah, I remeber reading that mag a while back, too. I think it was either Super Chevy or maybe Car Craft. I'm gonna dig through my mag stack now.

Marc-my car is a '72, this is early second gen, not first. Thanks for the reply though.

It was the January issue of Chevy High Performance. According to them, a 2nd Gen Camaro can take 17x8's with 245/40/17 in the front and 17x9.5's with 275/40/17 in the rear. The front backspacing is 4" and the rear backspacing is 5.5" This is what they say, how accurate is it? I don't know. But I thought I would pass it along for you.

Hey thanks, 69Protouring. Now I have to call the editor that wrote the article with the huge combo I mentioned mounted on their '71 and find out what was offset/backspacing they used and whether they had to make any other mods.
