View Full Version : backspacing on 67'
David Bryant Mar 19th, 02, 05:15 PM I know the subjet has been covered thousands of times, but ive checked all the old listing i can find and keep getting close to what i want, but no cigar. Im getting the wheel vintiques chromed corvette rallye wheels (cheap but quality, 2 things i look for), (15x7 up front and 15x8 in back). What wheel spacing will i need to make that work? i know what tires will fit and all, i jsut dont know wheel spacing, and i dont trust myself enough to try to figure it out on my own.
John Doyle Mar 20th, 02, 08:04 AM Stock 15 x 7's & 8's were 4" bs. Depending on how high your car sits will decide on wether those rub or not (along with the tire size that you mount). I think the Vintiques come with 4.5" bs., which, if they do, would be the safer choice.
I had stock 15 x 7's on my '67 with a 26" tall tire (215/65) I only rubbed the fronts a little on the most severe bumps at the stock ride height. I then lowered my car with 2" drop coil springs. The fronts rubbed alot then. I also have the '69 disk brake conversion which pushes the wheels out a bit more than drums.
You might make it with 4 in. of bs. with the set up you have, but you also might not.
I know on my '67, I'd do the 4.5.

Mike67RS Mar 20th, 02, 11:07 AM I have 15X7's up front with 4.5" B.S. and 15X8's in back with 4" B.S. The fronts fit perfect with 235-60-15 tires. The rears sometimes rub on the outer lip with 245-60-15 tires. I would go with a 4.5" B.S. on rears on either 15X7" or 15X8" wheels.
David Bryant Mar 20th, 02, 06:34 PM 3 leaf springs are being placed on the rear of the car as we speak, they're not meant to raise it any, but im sure that'll will at least get rid of any sag it gained over the past 30 years, so i think i'll be fine with 15x6 (235-60-15) up front and 15x8 (245-60-15)on the rear, with the 4.5" back spacing. Thanks for all of your help. This is my #1 favorite site on the web.
David Bryant Mar 21st, 02, 07:04 PM I decided to go with 15x6 with 4" backspacing up front with 225-60-15, and 15x8 with 4.5" backspacing in back (think it'll work?) but my real question is, you said with 4" backspacing the tires rub the outerlip everynow and then with 245-60-15 in rear. Those tires (bfg radial TA's) atleast are 8.0" wide tread width, the 255-60-15 tires are only 8.2" wide. Will i be able to run those slightly larger tires with the deeper back spacing I have?
DjD Mar 21st, 02, 07:53 PM It's not the tread width that's the problem. It's the section width. A BFG 245/60/15 has a section width of 9.8", tread with of 8.0" and is 26.6" tall. Compared to 255's section of 10.2", tread 8.2" and height 27.1".
The 255 is almost 1/2" (0.4") wider over all and the widest part of the tire is further into the well.
I tried 255's on my '69 on 15x8's with 5" bs and they rubbed in the inner fender around every corner.

John Doyle Mar 22nd, 02, 07:37 AM I'm almost certain the 255's would clear the inner wheel well w/ 4.5 bs. You could run into a little problem with the outer lip (which would only require some minor trimming). The 255's are 27" tall too, so if your rear sits high, it will fill it up a bit.
