View Full Version : 17" Ford Mustang aluminum mini-spare tire.
pdq67 Mar 22nd, 02, 08:49 AM I need a 17" Mustang mini-spare to go with my new Bullitt wheels but I don't want to pay $250 or more plus S&H for one from the guy's selling them retail b/c I'm a tight-a--!
The great guy's over at the Bullitt site weren't really all that helpful, but were real nice to a First Gen. guy poking his nose in.
Anybody have an idea besides Ebay where I might be able to find someone that isn't trying to sell one at "retail"??? Surely there is a wheel boneyard that would sell cheaper???
Any and all comments appreciated! pdq67
novaderrik Mar 22nd, 02, 03:17 PM why not just get another Bullitt wheel to match the other 4?
on a side note, did you know that you can get those wheels now in chevy bolt pattern with fitments for older Chevy musclecars? saw that in an ad. Bet you really wanted to hear that now, after making them fit...

pdq67 Mar 22nd, 02, 04:40 PM I can use a fifth standard wheel but I am hoping to get a cheap space-saver spare just to give me some trunk room, thats all.
I got a hold of the man at Superior Wheel and he said they weren't going to make chevy bolt pattern real "Bullitt" Mustang wheels.
Thats why I went the way I did.
Go see them in person, they ARE SUPER!!! They come in three flavors, I think. Silver centered, dark gray centered and chromed or polished (I think).
To me they are a true "modern" repop of a classic. IMHO. pdq67
gheatly Mar 26th, 02, 09:59 AM PDQ, this may be a dumb question, but did you put those Bullit wheels on your Camaro (or are you a closet Ford man)?
The reason I ask is because I am helping my brother put a set on HIS 91 Mustang. We were at the Ford dealership buing some front brake components and I noticed that they sell new Bullit wheels for $135 each or $599 for a set of 4 installed. That is MUCHO cheaper than any other TTII type wheel I have seen.
pdq67 Mar 26th, 02, 05:04 PM No, not a closet Ford guy, but rather think that for the money, to me, "THEY ARE THE BEST LOOKING STOCK WHEEL ON ANYTHING TO COME DOWN THE PIKE IN QUITE A WHILE"!!!
Only the aftermarket originals on McQueen's car would be better looking but they don't come in 17's!!
And all costs together, they were alot cheaper then TT-II's or others b/c I LOOKED, and LOOKED, and LOOKED!!! pdq67
gheatly Mar 26th, 02, 06:50 PM PDQ, I was hooked because of price at the Ford dealership. I think the metallic charcoal painted center looks the best.
I sent you an e-mail with more specific questions like backspacing, bolt pattern, spacers, etc...
kobuzz Mar 27th, 02, 02:22 AM I'm interested in the info for the Bullit wheels also. Can you please post or E-mail to kobuzz01@aol.com Thanks!
JayBird Mar 27th, 02, 02:53 AM Could you send me the info as well.
Thanks,

gheatly Mar 27th, 02, 06:26 AM Because of the response, I thought I would post what I have learned so far(mostly from PDQ):
The Ford bolt pattern is 5 x 4.5-inch. GM uses a 5 x 4.75 inch, so the wheels are not a bolt-on. Damn!
PDQ got his rear axles and front hubs redrilled for the Ford pattern. This is the easy way if your car is already disassembled.
PDQ used a 1/2-inch thick spacer to get the wheels to approximate a 4.5 inch backspace.
From comments made by PDQ his e-mail to me, it is possible that someone makes an adapter that would provide spacing AND adapt to the Ford bolt pattern. However, I think the adapter would be thicker than 1/2, so there could be some clearance issues with the outer fenderwell. Hopefully PDQ can weigh in on this issue.
As stated above, you can get the stock Bullit wheels at your local Ford dealer for around $135 each. You can also get take-offwheels from Saleen with BRAND NEW Goodyear ZR Eagles already mounted for $800/set plus shipping. What does the chicken say? CHEAP! CHEAP!

pdq67 Mar 28th, 02, 04:27 PM The Bullitt wheels are 17" x 8" with 5.72" backspacing!
I used up .25" on each front with my 13" rotor thickness and with the .5" thick cheap aluminum universal spacers (not adapters), I end up with 4.47" backspacing.
I am running 225/45-17's on the front and 255/45-17's on the rear. I figure that with the .5" spacer on the back they will fit fine.
I am also running Grade-8, 1/2" x 2", full threaded wheel studs so should be strong enough, imho! And as stated I had Mosers redrill everything for the Ford bolt pattern b/c I didn't trust anybody around here to be accurate enough!! All totalled, everything is cheaper then the TT-II's being pushed and to me, I like the Bullitt wheels better! pdq67
Ps., I called Mosers in advance and made an appointment to redrill everything, drove over to Portland, IN arrived at 8:00AM, and in less the four hours everything was done! Cost was for two hubs, two, 12 bolt axles, and four new rotors, plus installed studs was about $160 or so.
My corn popper gets right at 50 mpg so gas and my time wasn't enough to worry about since I just took a day's vacation to mess around anyway.
I didn't know about any Ford Dealers discounts b/c the Dealer here didn't want to be competitive so I gave $150 each rim from Summit with free shipping.
I think they come in four types so please ask.
Light gray silver metallic centers.
E-T style, Hot Rod Primer dark gray centers.
Polished.
And (I think) Chrome(??). pdq67
JonT Mar 28th, 02, 07:40 PM awww...alright. I guess they are kind of nice lookin' rims even if they are for a Muh..Muh..Muh...I can't say it. Just tell me you didn't use the Running Horse center caps.
pdq67 Mar 29th, 02, 04:45 PM He, He!!! What better way ta say you run all over pony's then to run the center caps!!! LOL.
And if I can't handle my share of them pesky little pony's with my big engine, then I might just have to add a LUNG!!!! pdq67
camaroracerlt1 Apr 3rd, 02, 08:57 PM Hey, I love those rims too, but I don't like the idea of redrilling for the Ford bolt pattern. It just makes things like replacing rotors difficult. Man, I wish they made TTD's in 17. I may not like the idea, but I have an idea that might make this better for those of you who want to do it. If you have a open differential 10 bolt with drums it makes it even better. I have been thinking about this for a while but couldn't figure an economical way around the different bolt pattern and offset, but why not use a ford 8.8 rear end. You can get a whole one from the bone yard for between $200-$300. Then you get a posi, disc brakes, I'm pretty sure the correct offset, and some have 3.55 or 3.73 gears. Cut off the mounting brackets and weld on the mopar leaf spring brackets($15 from summit) and not only is the bolt pattern and offset problem solved but you also get a posi and disc brakes. I'm sure you are also aware of the strength of these rear ends. They are very similar to a 12 bolt Chevy rear, the bearings even have the same part number. Is there any reason that this wouldn't work? Pdq67, what do you think?

pdq67 Apr 4th, 02, 04:05 PM I figure that if I ever need a new rotor after mine were drilled, that I would buy what I need and use the old drilled rotor as a template and drill what i need myself!
Just use the chevy holes for bolts and the Ford holes as templates, that's all.
If I ever go through my 12 bolt which I just might b/c of my 496, I will go with a 9" Ford set up for my car. The lincoln 9" rear, I think has disc's on it so should do fine if disc's are wanted. But I would have to do a search here to refresh my memory b/c I think it has been discussed at length in the past. pdq67
PS., and if this happens, I will probably have to upgrade my M-20 Muncie, too!
