View Full Version : How do you guys get those tires to fit up front?

Or am I missing something?

I am in the process of putting the front end back together on my 67 RSSS. Its Hotchkised and converted over to 12" brakes. I will need at least 16" rims.

The car had F70-14's on it. They are about 24.5 dia x 8.5 section x 6.5 tread. When mounted on a 3-1/2" backspace 6" (.5 negative centerline)Cragar SS they hit the drivers side subframe when up against the steering stops(passenger side is clooose). A
9.5 section tire on a .5 negative centerline will shred itself on my steering box bolt heads.

I am thinking of trying to fit a 225/55ZR16 up front. But to clear the frame I must move back to a neutral centerline. So say I go with an 8" wheel with a 4" backspace, doesn't that get me into the fender? Somewhere here I thought I had read that if you get up to 3" "frontspace" you are into the fender.

Its gonna be a while yet until I get the body back together and I wanted to pick up the wheel/tire combo now and get it right the first time.

Oh well

An 8" wheel with 4" bs will not work in the front. Are you set on 16's? They don't make many size tires for 16's anymore. I think the widdest I've seen is a 255. Why not 17's?

I dont have a problem with 17's. It just that if the goal is taller/narrower up front the increased wheel dia doesn't help much. I had read at some point people having these wide setups on the front, with factory subframes, and I was curious how they were pulling it off. Its a small place up front on a 67. Were it not for the need for the big wheels I would probably be running MT Sportsman's.

A 255/40 tire is about the biggest you can fit in the front, IMO. You have to be about dead on when getting the correct backspacing of wheel, or it will rub.

I'm running 225/50s on a 16x7'' rim with 3.75'' backspacing, if I remember right, and haven't had any problems.

Hi Boodlefoof
On my subframe a 3.75 backspace with a tire like yours(BFGoodrich lists as a 9.2 section width at 7" rim)I would be driving the sidewall into the steering box bolts. Every since the original wheels came off I've been buffing the chassis with the tires through 3 different wheel sets.

Steve,

I don't really know what's up with your car, you wheels must turn very far or something. I'm running an 8" wheel with 5.25" backspacing, with a 255 tire, and my wheels barely rub the frame at full lock.

I wouldn't have a chance of running that setup.

I have a 245/50/16 4.5"B/S on a Vintage Wheel Works "45" and 13" Baer Brakes. From full droop to full bump it does not rub anywhere.

Check out my link for the pictures.

I had a 225/60R15 (9.1 section 25.6 dia)
mounted on another old Cragar SS (I have a dozen of those things all only suitable for trailer use) that is 7" with a 3-1/2" inch backspace (dead on the centerline). The tire misses the frame rail by less than 1/8" when against the stop.

I have a 16x7 up front with a 215/60 tire and a 4 inch backspace. I would recomend a 225/55 tire, you shouldn't have a rubbing problem.
