View Full Version : Having backspacing changed on existing rims...who does this???
Spongebob Oct 30th, 02, 08:37 AM Hey guys. I have a set of polished AR Torque-Thrust II that used to be on my 4th gen. When I sold the car I kept the rims in hopes of being able to have them "refitted" to fit on my 67.
Anybody know a place that offers this service? It would be nice if it were near Pittsburgh, PA but, I'm willing to ship them if need be. There has to be someone...I really don't want to sell these!!!! http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif
Thanks,
Chad
pdq67 Oct 30th, 02, 02:36 PM Am I mistaken, but aren't the AR TT-2's cast or forged as one piece?
I don't think you can change the B/S if they are...
Anyway, BTW, what's the B/S of what you have b/c some of the guy's are running some pretty deep B/S'ed wheels on our First Gen's. pdq67
DjD Oct 30th, 02, 03:20 PM They make adapters that are about 2" thick that bolt to your hubs and them the 4th gen wheels bolt to the adapters.

Spongebob Oct 31st, 02, 12:26 PM pdq,
I bought them 3-4 years ago. I don't know how they make them now but mine are two-piece. I can feel the seam behind the center of the rim. I would think manufacturing would still be the same.
My biggest concern isn't for the rear. I have C.E. formed frame rails and will be doing a mini tub. The front is what I'm worried about...they are 17" x 9.5" rims with a 7" backspace.
I would think that a spacer would be a little dodgy under high power loads. Not that the car makes alot of power now but, that will change in the future. Planning on making between 500-550hp when the car is finished.
Who makes that spacer, DjD? American Racing?
Thanks for the help guys,
Chad
DjD Oct 31st, 02, 12:48 PM I'll try to find out who makes them... They are not spacers, they are adapters and I know guys with big blocks that really put their cars through the paces that use them with no hesatation. In the front even with adapters you will have to loose the inner fenders or modify the ones you have...

MarkM Oct 31st, 02, 01:11 PM Vettebrakes.com makes bolt on spacers.
There are also a few company's that make them that are advertised in "Truckin" magazine.

67rsmoneypit Oct 31st, 02, 02:33 PM spongebob, just thought I would mention I ran a 17x9.5 rim on the front of my 67 with 5" backspacing for about a year & half. they fit, but the tire had to be pretty small to clear and I wasn't totally happy with the way they looked. (225/45/17) you might find a shorter/wider tire that will clear everything and look good but I finally just ordered new wheels with 8" width for the front. by the time you buy adapters and shorter tires... you might be better off buying two new wheels and having a spare set for the back. just a suggestion
pdq67 Nov 1st, 02, 06:55 PM Stock, D-70/14's are like 25.3" or so in diameter and the 225/45-17's are like 24.97" or so they shouldn't look all that small, imho...
Maybe will need to adjust the fender height b/c that is what I am looking at doing once my bb is in my car. I do know my 225's are a schosh over 9" in section width so on my 8" Bullits, look OK to me, but to each his own opinion.. pdq67
Spongebob Nov 2nd, 02, 04:46 AM Ok, I think I know what I'm going to do.
Buy two more TT2's for the front that are smaller in width (probably 17"x8"). Then, take the extra 9.5" that would have been on the front and use them to mount drag radials for the rear. Or, does anyone make DOT slicks that are 17" diameter?
Thanks all. Any other suggestions; fire away.
Chad
67rsmoneypit Nov 2nd, 02, 08:20 AM pdq, when I said they looked small, what I meant was they are narrower than the wheel and apear quite stretched on the sidewall. I tried a wider tire on the 9.5" rim and it rubbed on several points. short of removing the inner fender I don't think I could have made it work the way I wanted it to for my car. I really tried to avoid spending the money on new wheels. also, I just went out in my garage and measured my old wheels that are on the floor, they measure 10 5/8" from edge to edge. I believe the wheel companys size them on the inside measurement.
MarkM Nov 4th, 02, 07:59 AM Nitto and BFG make 275/40 17 drag radials.
red69camaro Nov 6th, 02, 10:10 AM For the record, I got my spacers from Skute call 845.623.4389 or email peteris@skulte.com.
I've got 17x9.5 -55mm with 1 3/4" spacers. They make a nice product.
