I have a set of YH wheels that are ready for paint. I have PPG DBU8568 for the basecoat. How much flatener do I need to add to the clear to make these look right? Is this something PPG has a code for and can mix for me?

I got an answer from my PPG guy today. They can mix it. It is a Matte Flat Clear. The PPG code is 39063.

don't forget to mix about 3-4 drops of green into the argent silver, it gives the color the correct hue

Is that 3-4 drops per pint, per quart, per gallon? I am new at paint and am trying to get these wheels looking good.

When I got the wheels they had been painted charcoal grey on the outside. It was a bad paint job so some of the paint had chiped off in quite a few spots. I don't recall the original paint that was visible having the green tint. Is it possible that they did not have the green hue?

I too am getting ready to paint my YH wheels (I need one more if anybody has one?) Are these paint codes the old original ones or something close that somebody came up with? I also would like to know how much green to add.
Thanks
Jim

These are the original PPG codes. The 8568 paint code will bring up the clear code in the PPG computer system.

Try this. This is a great source for original PPG paint codes.

Thanks for the web site murph. I have hard copies of the 69 color sheet. I found an old PPG book. What I would like, Is to find out how you got the code for the wheels, and does the formula include the green tint?
Thanks

Jim,

I got the 8568 code for Argent Silver through this web site. I then confirmed it on the color charts. The next step would be to find out from the PPG store what the color mix is that makes up 8568.

I have a PPG dealer near by. I will talk to them about the codes. I'll let you know what I find out.
Thanks

hey gmjim! sorry i didn't get back, i was away. anyway, argent silver is the correct color. when i'm spraying wheels, i mix up about 1 pint of color, then mix in green. i use a grass green laquer i have around, but you can get some tint (toner) from your paint store. i clear with ppg hi-perfomance clear- never urethane- to shiny

I would like to know if the PPG 8568 contains the green tint. If not, is there a name for the PPG green that needs to be added at 3-4 drops per pint? Is it medium green, or another PPG source color name?

I have looked into a few resources and Year One lists the tints as Argent silver for anything prior to 1970 and anything 1970 and beyond as Argent Silver with the green tint.

Ricks list a different set of years with the green tint that say's 67 without and 68-69 with the green tint. I am not sure if one is correct or the other.

PPG lists Argent Silver through 1972 then also list Argent Silver 8568 for 73, but also Dark Argent 33055 for 73. Is this the non-green tint vs. green tint codes?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have an e-mail into PPG about the code for rally wheels that contains the green tint. The PPG lab in Ohio got me the up to date base clear codes for my 69 Z/28 Fathom green. The dash paint, steering column paint and rear window package tray area are all different. Zero gloss for the dash, 30 percent for the package tray area etc.etc. I was very happy when the mixing codes they sent me were identical to a scan taken from an old flat hood that I had that was taken off the car when it was 6 months old. They still have these codes and can translate them into todays formulas (base clear). I'm not a painter. I can turn a scratch into a panel replacement! I'll leave the mixing up to the pro's
Thanks
Jim
BTW - Trivia. Did you guys know that argent is the french word for silver!

Received the e-mail from PPG today. It says....

Hello Jim,
The number 8568 is no longer available in DDL. It is available in several other lines of our paint. You are correct in stating that the 8568 is listed on the chip page for the year you requested but not listed specifically as being for "wheels". That, unfortunately, is all the information we have. The color is still being used by General Motors. Please contact our Technical Service Department at 440/572-6111 for a recommendation on the best paint quality to use on wheels. If you have any further questions, please contact us.

Jim,

Thanks for the update. I don't know if it is worth anything, but the pre 1970 PPG color charts don't list applications for the 8568, but in 1970 and newer the charts show 8568 as the color for wheels/corvette wheels.

This still leaves the big question of green tint.

Did the rally wheels actually have a green tint or did the pigments change with age. I have a '72 Lemans Sport that was painted silver in the '70s. When I bought the car in '82 the silver had turned to a pale green. Just curious if anyone else ever ran into this.

The green tint baffeled them at PPG too. They suggested that "the paint must have aquired a greenish patina with age". They said that, not me. patina?
Anyway. I think I'm just gonna paint the wheels Argent Silver and get it over with. Won't be able to see the color of the wheels from inside the car anyway!

Patina. I think I had that for dinner last week at this nice restaurant.

I took my wheels in for paint last Monday. Argent Silver it is.

hey GMJim! don't beat yourself up over the green tint, its just one of the anal things i do when restoring camaros, like indexing the valve stems on the tires, and color code stripes on the rear springs. Enjoy your car and see ya later!
