Need some opinions here!

I am getting ready to go back to the original wheel and tire size on my 69 RS/SS396 and I can't decide what tires to put on it. There are the Goodyear Polyglas F70-14, the Firestone Wide Ovals and the Firestone Redlines. Does anyone have any opinions on what I should use?

Sure, go over to "The Tire Rack" or "Discount Tire" and take your pick!!!

I bought my 17" Sumitomo HTZ II's from them to go on my Mustang Bullitt Rims that I finally got on my car. 225/45's in front and 255/45's in the rear..

I was really wanting to run 50 series but 17"/50 series are about as common as "hen's teeth" if you get my drift! And I have a funny feeling I should have went 275"s!!! pdq67

Bruce, The redlines would look the best on that car. Go to Kelsey or Lucas Tire for those tires. Another option is to look at Diamond Back Classics tires. They are a 70 series redline radial tire that they make up. Look good and ride good. They advertise in Hemmings.

pdq,

I'm sure that those tires would probably look awesome with the right set of wheels ON SOMEONE ELSE'S CAR! :D Myself, I am a bit of a purist and there is nothing like a perfectly restored Camaro with rally's and original style rubber. graemlins/thumbsup.gif That's me and I'm sure alot of other Camaro enthusiasts feel the same way. If I decide to go for the Street Rod look, or similar, I'll check out your suggestions!

Oramac, I thought about the redline's on a red car and I wondered if it was too much? But I like the ideal of the radials as I still cruise locally and I'm trying to stay short of the "trailer queen" image. Thanks for the input, consideration will be given! graemlins/beers.gif

Bruce,

All I was saying was that you may find what you want over at either place that I mentioned..

I know not everybody wants their car to ride on the the tires and wheels I ended up with, but I will be da-ned if I want to drive my car as hard as I used to drive it as a stupid kid with the poor tires AND poorer brakes that came on it stock!!!

I can tell you a couple of stories that would make you not want to go for a spin with me!!!

And I know again that everybody won't drive their car as hard as I will if I get a clear road for stretch and my "bird-dog" don't "bark"!!!!!!

PS., and by the way, I still have my original blue steel rims and dog-dish hubcaps!!! They haven't been on my car since I put my Cragar deep-dish chrome reverse on back in the spring of '67!!

Am I to understand that the new Mustang has the same bolt size/pattern as our 1st gen Camaros have? PDQ67, U got a picture we can see of Bullits on your Camaro?
Thanks
Bill

Billyd,

I had both my stock drum hubs, a pair of two-piece rotor/hubs, a pair of 13" front rotors, a pair of 11.75" rear rotors and both my 12 bolt axles redrilled to the Ford pattern to mount the 17" Bullitts by Mosers in Indiana!!! They drilled and tapped everything so I can use 1/2" althread hardened and tempered studs and Grade-8 bolts..

I drilled both types of front hubs b/c I later found out that I only have like 1/8" to 3/16" clearance between my upper A-arm lip and my rim inner lip using the drum hubs b/c of the Pro-Motorsports spindle extenders that I am using to raise my front roll center.

The two-piece rotor/hub, hubs have less wheel flange "offset" then the drum hubs so they give me a lot more clearance...

I'm with you Bruce. graemlins/thumbsup.gif I am stuck between Firestone Wide Ovals and Goodyear polyglas. I like them both. (either one would look great)

Redlines would be my last choice. I think they look good on GTO's.

I am running Polyglas F70-14's with SS wheels on my car and they look great.. but that is where it ends. I would not recommend driving around on them too much, as the handling disappears. I just swap them out for BFG's and Torq Thrust D's for normal everyday driving.

They do look different, and I too like the original look.

I wish the repro tire manufacturers would hurry up and repro the Firestone or Goodyear RWL tires in a radial. That would be the best of both worlds.

Anyone know someone in the repro tires business? smile.gif

Hugger,

That is just exactly why I am restifying my car instead of putting her back stock.

I have had too many close calls from driving her hard and then depending on the stock stuff to stop and/or turn!!!

My wife used ta really get all bent out of shape when I had to come to a screaching halt by downshifting continuously at speed, then stomping on the brakes so hard I thought I would bend my optional wood/plastic steering wheel and then holding on while the as-end hopped around until she stopped!!!! My homemade slapper bars just a banging away!!!

NO THANKS!!!! pdq67
