I was watching one of the Hod Rod TV shows and the segment was on a company called SLP that converts Firebird Trans Ams into Firehawks and Camaro Z28's into SS's. They do this for GM.

Cool HiPo stuff added. Engine, suspension,.brakes, etc.
The program inferred that ALL Camaro SS's from GM are SLP products.

When I checked out the Chevy dealer for a new SS, they did not have much info on this. The GM literature doesn't say much either.

For you folks that have 4th gen SS's is this true? Or is the SLP SS a special breed and Chevy builds an SS itself?

So confusing.....But I want one!

SLP has been making the SS for chevy since 1996. A Z28 is shipped from the factory to SLP and SLP converts them into SS cars. Then SLP ships them back to the factory for dealer distribution. They come with the full factory warranty and are even in the brochures now. You might want to check out SLP's web sight: http://www.slponline.com/ They have a message board on there. I am sure that all your questions can be answered there.

I don't know how I missed this one... If a 4th gen is gonna wear the SS badges it goes through SLP... There are Bergers and Intimadators that get upgrades ala the Bergers and Yenko's of old (Kinda neet!) As you saw in the Speed Vision show SLP started with the '92 bird and made 25 FireChickens (Fire Hawks) that sold for big bucks. (over 40K in '92) They would have made more but that is all that was ordered. In '93 (lt1 time) GM improved the Bird enough that the SLP cars could be mod'd and sold at a competive prive... In '96 came the first Camaro to wear the SS badges in 24 years!! 2410 were made betewwe Canada and the US and it has the distinction of having some badging saying Z28SS. (under hood and floormats etc)

As for the dealers, well anything that generates work is often shunned. Have you ever tried to order a truck or any vehicle through a dealer? Most will tell you it can't be done these days. If so why would it be different for a Camaro? Over the years I think sale persons have been a bit more educated to the SS.. Another thing is and info that isn't tied down is collector materal!! I have it on good authority that the Z28SS floormats, the comerative key fobs and the special console plaque disapeared before my '96 left the dealer...

Thanks Dennis. Does your SS have the full treatment? Engine, suspension mods, Cold air induction, etc? I was checking out the SLP web site and it seemed there were a lot of options available through them, but I'm not sure if the dealer SS's are optioned the same.

It depends on the dealer as to how they option them. When I ordered my 99SS the dealer had no idea about the options that could be added by SLP under the Y2Y option code. All of the previous SS sold through the dealer were the base SS model which basically is a Z28 with the cold air hood, different rear spoiler, different exhaust, 17 inch wheels, and some suspension upgrades. On the 98 and up SS models, Chevrolet performs all of the upgrades except for the hood and spoiler. The cars are then shipped to SLP for the installation of the hood and spoiler. While at SLP, if Y2Y options were ordered, they are also added.

I opted to have SLP add their Bilstein suspension, new differential, synthetic lubricants, and some different floor mats. You can check out my web site for more information.
