View Full Version : Double Oil Filter.. who actually uses them?

I saw this on an aftermarket parts show once. It has a special cap that goes over the hole where the oil filter origionally goes, and a hose that runs from this cap to a special holder that mounts to the firewall. This holder allows two oil filters to be attached in series with one another, thus "double cleaning" your oil which in turn, is supposed to make your engine last longer.

If anyone here knows what I'm talking about, do these things actually work?

Sounds kind of cheesey to me. How much cleaner is your car if you wash it twice instead of once?

Americans love their cars, so there will always be a market for products like this. Seems we are always looking for a better way to protect our "babies."

I have been in the Army for 12 years, 8 of them as a Petro Lab SGT. I worked mostly with fuel but have run my share of particulate contaminate tests on lube oils- looking specicially at filter effeciency. The Army doesn't buy fancy oil filters and they always worked fine.

For my 68 Camaro, I use regular orange Fram Filters and sythetic Mobil 1 5-30.

Most of these setups are using the filters in parallel, which doubles the size of the filter. You'll probably find several folks at this site who recommend using a filter with a large filtration area.
Some are setup as a bypass oil filtration system, where one of the filters has a very fine filtering medium but only filters a small amount of the oil.

Single and dual remote oil filters. I've heard a couple people swear by them. 2 filters instead of one - you decide.

I'd think that if you change your oil & filter regularly that the stock set up is just fine. It may be different for heavy duty/off road applications. Seems to me that the only advantage for street use is to move the filter away from the exhaust (headers) so you can change the oil filter easily.

Big heavy equipment has had multi filters for years. For extra fine filtration down to 1/10th of a micron compared to 20 microns, the dual systems do a super job if you are truely into super clean oil.
Here is some info. on one system Im aware of :
dual oil filter system (http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/bf.aspx)

Back in the Day, A lot of racers (NASCAR and NHRA) used to run the twin remote oil filter set-ups. Now they run single remotes.
I read once that Smokey Yunick said that he ran a large capacity single over a dual set-up because he experienced an oil pressure drop from passing the oil through 2 filters.
With that said I do run a remote oil filter due to my oil pan/header configuration. I use a performance FORD style filter (like FRAMS HP-1 but I have switched to a WIX brand, also this is required by the remote mount) and keep it on the same level as the original, I just mounted it forward of the engine on the frame. Makes changing the filter a no mess situation too.
