: Swisch sound....

I've recently got a swisching sound after i release the gaspedal after WOT when driving. Sound like a Turbo wastegate sound, sort of.

It also behaved strange when i was driving up a hill and i pressed the pedal 2/3 down on the 2nd gear and the engine started to sound very exhausted and tired and then it also got tired and almost stopped, and again i heard the Swisching sound but more extended? It has never been like this before.

I have recently installed a Holley 4160 600cfm Vac. and it worked perfect after i adjusted the accspump cam and changed the vac. spring for the sec. ports.

Ive checked all the vac. hoses and they seams to be okey.

The engine is a 327cid/275hp and i have a 11" torqueconverter/TCI breakaway in a TH350.

Is this a sign on a bad gasket?

Thanks

The only "swishing" sound I could think of is a timing chain so worn it is rubbing the timing cover. If you put a timing light on it, does the timing mark jump all over the place?

Magnus,
I also have a 327 with a Holley 4160 with a similar sound. When I punch the gas and let off I here a strange sound, almost like a fan belt slipping or squeeling sound. I have changed all the belts (several times). It does not do this in neutral, only when I'm driving it. Let me know if you find something. It keeps raining here so I don't know when I'll get out again to check it...

Hi

I noticed another thing today aswell, sometimes it shifts at WOT at 3000rpm and sometimes 3500rpm but it should be doing it at 4500 as it did with the rochester carb.

I my guess is that this holy s***t is leaking or something. It is brand new.

Im going to disconnect all other things that is hooked up to the vacuum, as the headlamp doors etc. to be sure its not any other stuff thats leaking vacuum.

To be continued....

Travis:

I forgot this thread because of the long winter here in Sweden.

I hooked up a timing light and as you said, my timing mark jumps around so much i first thought my distributor was lose or something, it only jumped from idle to about 2500-3000rpm. could this still be the chain, or could it be point breakers that dont work propably?

And sorry for that To be continued thing. This thread has longer time between the answers from me than it takes for George Lucas to 2 starwars movies. smile.gif

I guess it could be the distributor, but my moneys on the timing chain, especially with the other symptoms you described. When the chain gets that worn (or all the teeth of a factory type nylon/aluminum timing gear are disintegrating), the slack can get bad enough for the cahin to hit the timing cover. If left alone long enough, several things can happen. 1, you'll wear a hole in the timing cover and starting getting an oil leak. 2, it may start backfiring thru the carb when trying to start it. And 3, if and when the chain finally lets go, then engine will die, and there is a very good chance you will bend some valves, requiring the heads to be repaired...and it could damage a piston in the process too. I would highly suggest you check it out.

Does it "swoosh" at idle? If so, you can isolate the noise by taking something like a broken off broomhandle, stick one end on the side of the timing cover, and hold your ear up to the other end. It is sort of a makeshift stethascope...if it is the timing chain really loose you'll hear all kinds of growling and swooshing in there. Hope this helps.

I can't hear that swisch/swosch sound at all with just revving the enigne. It only appears when im driving and hav 2/3 or WOT and then releasing the foot from the pedal. And it seams only to happend at about 4000+ rpm and never on the 1st gear (TH350).

I forgot to mention that the vacuum jumps around aswell at idle. I did't try to drive with the vacuum gauge because i did't find a hose long enough.

And another symptom, it feels sluggish up to 2800-3000 rpm, and then the car nearly jumps away.

I have tried the most with the carb aswell with different springs, jets and accs.nozzles. But now the carb is back to normal factory spec.

By the way, holley themselfs recommended me to use accs. nozzle #37. Thats their biggest nozzle in the Holley list i got, and i also mentioned that i have a 327Cid.

that "swish" sounds is the money leaving your pocketbook to maintain these wonderful cars we have.

Hahaha

You are probalby 100% right about that :D

I forgot to mention my ET on the 1/4mile. This was the best run out of 3, and this was when my car had those problems i wrote about in previous posts. With jumping timing and very jumpy vacuum readings:

14.705 @ 153.4km/h

is that bad or good for a 327cid stock engine(with the flakes), holley vac. sec. 600cfm and a th350 trans(PG as original) and stock rearend, 17" x 9" rear, 17" x 8" front.?
