a neverending battle,

my 67 R/s has the worst gas milage,

it sucks through a full tank like a fat girl with a free bag of cheese puffs.

I dont know how much gas milage I am getting, I filled up, drove about 35 miles and burned 1/2 tank of gas, it dont smell rich, it is not running bad, its timed correctly, the only thing I can think of is the frigging float in the gas tank is messed up? I put more gas in and will see how it does tomorrow when I take it out. the engine is a slightly modified 327 with a H750 duel feed, vaccum secondaries, .214i .244eh @050 cam (right dang near stock specs) carb has bee been re jetted , bowles are fine. what gives?

shooting in the dark on this one but only thing is it had 1/2 tank of older gas in the car when i filled it up. could the older gas been heavier and sunk to the bottom? and then just burned faster??? shooting in the dark here,. but I know this thing cant eat gas this bad...

Chris,

I think you have a bad sending unit. There is no way your 327 is getting 4 miles per gallon without belching out a fog of black smoke.

You said it used 1/2 of a tank. When you filled it back up, did you put in 9 gallons? Camaros have 18 gallon tanks. Worst case, you should be getting 10 miles a gallon, which would be 180 miles on a tank.

My sending unit does just the opposite. I have a full tank of gas for 100 miles and the next thing I know, it drops to 1/4 of a tank.

The 750 is too big for a 327, but if you have a stiff secondary spring, it won't matter as much.

How are you driving it? If you've got your foot in it stoplight to stoplight you can burn a lot of gas in a hurry. I agree with Gheatly - the 750 is too much carb for a 327. Also check your plugs - I'll bet they're all black and you're putting out more gas through the tailpipe than you realize.

Do you have gas sloshing out the back somewhere that you don't realize? I know a certain RED CAMARO IN COLORADO that had a similar issue with gas pouring out the back making a nice mist on the freeway... It was searching for a light. http://www.camaros.net/forum/tongue.gif

BTW- Old gas doesn't get heavier. It can collect moisture, and separate forming a layer of water and a layer of gas, but it doesn't get heavy and burn faster.

I chose the 750 because I thought the 600 Holly it did have was a piece of junk, it worked ok i guess, but it felt like it was Starving the engine, hence the 750 ,

I do think somthing is up with the 750 though , I think the jets are too big still, so I will try another carb, I have heard that Edlebrocks are pretty good, ( I would live a demon carb but I am not rich! and those bad boys are expensive!!!)

any suggestions on carb choices?

BTW: my float was stuck, I bumped into my car with my butt a few times and I myseriously had 3/4 tank of gas
!! thanks!

Was your previous Holley a part # 1850, 600 cfm? These are terrible carbs and they should really quit selling them. Was your carb a single feed? If so, that's probably what you had and it is definitely not a performance carb.

These carbs usually had a very stiff secondary spring and maybe your engine just couldn't pull them open enough.

It burns me up that Holley has been selling the same carb for 40 years knowing the trouble people had with them. Suddenly, Edelbrock and Demon come onto the scene and they re-engineer everything and come out with the HP series. All (or most) of the problems are fixed and of course they double the price!! This is the product they should have been selling in the first place at the lower price!! This by itself is reason enough to go support the other guys. It can't cost that much more to manufacture an HP carb than their standard carb (sorry, had to get that off my chest).

I think you would be happy with an Edelbrock 600cfm.

Too much carb. I like stock Rochesters. They can be set up to flow more than their stock rating (see f body.org,tech article section) if you need more carb.

Chris, Try Fat-FREE cheese puffs, I'll bet the bag lasts longer!

well, I feel like a MORON! , turns out after I installed my new HEI, I had to do several "test fits" to get it "timable" with enough room to advance the timing, well when I did this I moved the vacuume line to my carb in a wrong location, I moved it to the correct location, advanced the timing a bit and Fried the tires 65 Feet on the first stomp. I have a medium spring on the secondaries, it is opening when I stomp on it and at higher RPM's , The carb seems to be fine. and the popping was myt timing, and the Gas milage was a combo of the timing and the vacuume advance boo boo...

well whaddduya know.
