I have a doug nash five speed. I had it overhauled about five months ago, I spent about 1200 dollars. they replaced, synchros, bearings, reverse gears and parts, sliders, and forks. I didn't put a new clutch, I reused my centerforce 2, also at the time I had a rear main oil leak that I still have, at first the tranny was really difficult to engage to first,I would have to let up on the clutch to get it to engage, the guy at the shop told me it was fine the syncros needed to brake in. now it is still a little hard to get in first but not as bad, the problem is at high rpms it grinds really bad from first to second gear. also I can hear bearing noises through the shifter now. (rattles a little bit) also the clutch is really starting to go out and my oil leak is worse, I am going to take out the tranny and take it back to the shop and I am trying to find out if these problems are my fault,so they can't get over on me. I want them to fix everything because if have a warranty. any answers, advice, i know it's a lot any help would be great!

My 2 cents worth, please. I talked to a tranny guy that was selling rebuilt Muncies over at the SCS at Indy Raceway Park weekend before last. He said that Richmond Gear bought Nash out and that now the rebuild parts for the Nash trannies are getting scarce. And that he had heard of people dumping their Nash trannies because of this problem.

I also asked him if he had ever heard of a Mopar A833 overdrive four speed stick tranny behind a Chevy diesel engine in mid '80's four wheel drive trucks. He said yes and that he thought that the 6 and 6.2 (or whatever) diesel engines had the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a BB. He commented that the 833 tranny wasn't very strong in the overdrive design but I would think that the non overdrive gears (first, second and 1 to 1 ratio) would be as strong as the standard four speed A833 boxes since they went behind "Hemi's".
Hope this is of interest because I'm still trying to figure out how to put a "cheap" overdrive stick in my car!!! pdq67

I just did my nash 5, they are the same things as the richmond units, all the rebuild parts are available from richmond. I'd check out the linkage first. make sure you have no rods that are bent, cracked or otherwise out of whack. I had a cracked 1-2 rod that caused a "crunch" when i speedshifted in a Muncie M22
pps
fix that rear seal, it will turn a good clutch bad in nuthin' flat

Hey I had checked my shifter and all the bolts were loose. This must of been why it grinded. I tightened them, but I can still get it to grind once in a while. When i mean grind I mean a loud grind and clunk. Do you think I did some serious damage? also I can hear some bearing noise through the shifter now. What would your guess be to as what these problems are? another rebuild? Any help would be great. Ps. had any problems with yours?

Maybe the guy was just "pulling my chain" since he was selling rebuilt Muncies??? pdq67

From what I heard, Richmond did make a few changed to the Nsh 5 speed, but 1-3 gears are identical. I'm not sure what they changed though. It might nust be gear ratio's?? I would contact Richmond and find out what the real deal is.

I was told they were exactly the same. You can always pick different ratios for any tranny, mine is 3.27 first gear. Any other ideas about my tranny im just about to take it out and take it to the shop.
