Has anyone used the stock BB rockers for a cam with 595 lift with any success? I know there are different slots available. I checked mine at either end and there I was able to insert a paperclip wire easily between the slot and the stud. Has anyone had any experiences they can share. I checked the rockers for any stampings to identify if they are long slot or short. I saw none. can annyone suggest which I have. or can anyone suggest what lift the short slot ones will bind at.

Milan,

The "stock" short slot con work to about .500" lift, the ones with "L" stamped in them will work to .560" lift and the ones with "H" will work to .600"

Sounds like you have the short slot rockers, are you checking the clearance with the valve fully open and fully closed?

I checked them open and closed. There is clearance at both ends. If they were short would they bind and I wouldnt have the clearance I have

If they have ever hit for any real length of time you should be able to see a mark on the rocker stud.

A friend of mine had this problem on his SBC 327. He had a Comp XE284 hydraulic flat tappet cam and when we looked at the rockers with the engine off everything looked like it would clear, but when he would rev it apparently they would barely hit once in a while. The rocker interference side loaded the valves and wrecked his valve guides. He also had a couple bent pushrods. We realized what had happened when we took a rocker off.

I measured what I believe to be short slot rockers, from my 325/396. The slot is .690". I have new set of GM long slot rockers that have the "H" stamped in them and they measure .720"

Not much difference huh? Maybe someone else can measure some?

Hope this helps,
Joe

hey milan i have a 454 bored .30 over, rect port heads, comp cams 294s magnum cam, .595 lift, 248 dur @.50, what should the clearence be for the rockers, keep in mind i have a solid cam and valve lash is .022 intake and exhaust, i will check for a letter on mine tomorrow, i have only broke in cam and runmaybe 20 more mins past the initial 30 break in at 2000 rpm, might just get roller rockers, but who knows, i know my heads came of a 427 435hp 69 vette, and they are the stock rockers off of those, well thanks
Jake

I have read .060 or a heavy guage paperclip will do. I took the rocker to both end of pivot and made sure that I could insert the paperclip. I read also that more times the clearance prob is while the lifter is at the base of the cam. both at tha stud as well as the rocker touching the retainer. I have not been able to tear into the rockersagain to get my measurement. I would think that the general would keep production costs down and produce only one rocker that would fit all the bills.?

Well I measured the stock rockers they have no stampings on them. The measurement I came up with was between 44/64(.6875) and45/64(.7031). Are these short, long or extra long

Well just cause i dont like to leave issues uncompleted. I have just ordered a set of long slot rockers from gm. I wont risk doing the cam again. FYI

Milan, FYI

That's what I have -- but they no longer use grooved rocker balls. I was concerned so I asked my dealer if it was a mistake, he called GMPP and was told not to worry, that they quit using grooves with the Gen motors. I have assembled the motor but have not run them yet.....

I hope to install mine asap(today) I am dying to get my 67 to the track again. To tell you the truth I would think that the grooved pivots would give the oil a route escape especially on the long slots. But... what do I know.

The ones that I just got have (H) stamped and measure .75 That a big diff. I used a machinists rule and measures from tip to tip at the outer edge of the stud slot arc(say that 10 times fast). FYI
