Yet another problem has come my way:
Driving along the freeway at normal cruising rpm, when I touch the brakes for upcoming traffic, when my GEN light comes on, my tach jumps to 8 grand(my motor didnt rev that high, just tach moving), and I lose all power. As I am about to put it in neutral and move over to the shoulder, everything kicks back on as though nothing has happened. Weird, and it happened 3 more times on the same trip.
It always happened when the brake pedal was pushed. I thought maybe there was a short on my brake light switch in front of the brake pedal, but everything seems to be in order. The problem happens very sporadically also. I tried messing with the brakes cruising around town, and couldnt get the same problem to happen, yet it happened in my driveway as I went to put it in park. I thought it maybe was a fuel starvation problem when I was letting off the gas, but Im getting plently of PSI. I dont have an elec fuel pump.
Any ideas? Having a tempermental car is no fun at all is it . . .

Sounds electrical to me. Don't rule out the ignition switch. Try wiggling it around with the car running and see what happens. Check your wires to your coil and distributor (ignition wires not sparkplug wires). Oh yeah and check your wires to the distribution block on you radiator support. I would be shocked (pun intended) if it is a short, caure you haven't blown a fuse or smoked anything yet.

I had the same problem with a car I worked on, but does it have power brakes?

Check the firewall plug for the wireing harness. My 66 SS used to do that untill I figured out what was happening.

No power brakes, but I will be going over most of the electrical system tomorrow to see if I can cure anything.

As Royce suggested, look at the junction block on the radiator support next to the battery. You might want to disassemble the wires and clean everything with a wire brush.

The next place to look is the horn relay on the radiator support as well. Its on the drvr side, under the wash bottle. There is a buss bar on it to join the wire from the bat j/block and the power lead to the alt/firewall. Wire brush here also.

You also might want to dothe same with the ground straps from the engine to firewall.

Above all else, make sure there is a good continuity path of ground from the alt casing to the neg battery post. Notice, I said post, not cable clamp. Check those battery cables and clamps as well.
