Are there stampings on the end of the cam that you can see by taking off the water pump and timing chain cover?

How do you ID a cam that's in a motor without taking the cam out completely?

Most aftermarket cams have a stamping or engraving on the very back of the cam facing the firewall. If the engine is out, you can pop the freeze plug directly behind the cam and get the numbers off of it. Thats what I did to the engine I yanked out of the nova to confirm what the seller told me it was.

I just had the tranny/clutch out and I could have done it then. I guess it'll have to wait till I blow this one or go to a tremec.
