i have a 68 with a 327. it has been idling very low and very rough. occasionally when i shift into reverse or drive and hit the gas it pops almost like a little backfire. it accelerates poorly and i have seen a big drop in hp. the last time this happened, the auto shop said the dwell was off 10 degrees. they adjusted it and it ran fine.
a couple of questions. does this sound like a problem with the dwell? is something that an alectronic ignition (such as the pertronis ignitor) would remedy? if i got a dwell meter, could i make the adjustments myself?
thanks in advance and sorry about the length of the post.

My advise would be to take your Tach-Dwell Meter money and use it for a Pertronix unit. They are simple to install and all your points related problems will be over. I've had one in my car for 7 years now and had no problems.

I'd have to agree....points are fun for about 1 week.....then it becomes a PITA!
What you described could very well be caused by an incorrect point dwell. It is easy to set yourself...but you may want to look into replacing them...

I would just like to say that my 73 Z-28 has 56 K original miles on it ....the points that are in it have been there since around 1985 and it never misses a lick. Starts up fine and still loves to rev to 6500 no problems. I would personally rather have the points....they wont fail and leave you sitting. Dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with electronic ignition, just that I think points get a bad rap that they dont really deserve.

Point taken, Bill.....
After all, they were an industry standard for how many years, eh?
