hello all again , I searched this one and found 100 hits to a 350 engine link, not the TH350 trans, so here it is.

my latest project is to remove the old Powerglide and convert it to a TH350 with a nice shift kit. I have the Trans. but I need to know a few things.

I can get the center console piece that convertes it to a TH350 from the powerglide L D N R P to the 1 2 D N R P , fine. do I need new linkage, the spline is different from my PG, and the tailshaft is a little different than the Powerglide. I have a 308 10 bolt open rear (or somthing close to that gearing) what other Crap will I need to correctly convert this to the TH350, the old powerglide's 2 gear wind up takes too long. I need some more Go Go juice.

(but going to 70 in first gear is always fun)

thanks!

C.E.

The tailshaft is different, but is the overall lenght the same?A PG to TH350 swap is pretty much a direct bolt in,unless you have the wrong TH350 ie.one from a truck.I would measure from the trans/engine mating surface to the bolts that mount it to the crossmember, and from mating surface to the output shaft. If these are the same dimentions, you should be OK.The splines should also be the same as your PG,if not you might be better off just buying the right TH350.
I did this swap on my 67',and I believe I just had to bend the stock linkage slightly to get it to clear the housing.

It's an easy swap but depends on which TH350 you have. The standard car trans with the shorter tailshaft is a direct swap for the powerglide; crossmember, mount, yoke and driveshaft all remain the same. The shifter can be used but they sell a kit with the new indicator as you said. My friend used the kit from www.shiftworks.com (http://www.shiftworks.com) so that the detents were correct to get all gears.

If you have one of the longer tailshaft transmissions then you would have to swap tailshaft housings or shorten and re-balance the driveshaft. I believe the crossmember and mount still remain the same.

I've done this. Everyone's right about the case length, but in my case I put in a TH400 so I had to replace the driveshaft. I found a matching yoke at the junkyard then had a truck shop weld up a new shaft for about $80 (10 years ago).

As for the linkage... You didn't say what year your car is. I think you need to get a new linkage for a '67. For a '68 (which I have) or '69 you can use the old shift cable, but probably need new cable mounting brackets (the one bolted on the tranny that holds the cable, and the one bolted on the gear selector stud). I got these from D&R Classics for about $25. Don't spend 2 hours wandering the junk yard like I did - it's a waste of time.

Want to know what your new gearing will be? Check out http://camarotech1.com/refarticles/ref-spd-rpm.html
for a chart that will graph speed versus RPM in each gear for your new setup.

Good luck!
