i have a 77 camaro 350/4bbl with a 4 speed saganaw and 3.08 rear gear. My question is that on the highway the tac is near the red around 80mph. What can i do to get a higher speed with less tach? Is it the rear end gear cause i thought that 3.08 is a good highway gear.
Thanks,

Ron,
Either you are running some really high (numerically) gears (like 4.56 or so) and don't know it or your tach is not reading right. At 80 mph your tach ought to be somewhere in the 2,500 to 3,000 rpm range with 3.08 gears, not anywhere near the 5,000 rpm redline.
If you were close to redlining I would think you would "hear and feel" the engine screaming without even looking at the tach. If you don't get that sense then there is probably something wrong with the tach itself. Is it factory or aftermarket?

it is the factory original, and now that i think of it maybe it is the tach itself. it definatly has 3.08 gears that are factory. Know any way to trouble shoot a tach?

Check to make sure all the wiring connections are tight. Also how does the tach react when you go thru the gears? Hook up a another tach to validate the one in the car.

I agree with Mike.On the RPM calculator, with a 27" tire,3.08 gears,80 MPH you should be turning 3050 RPM.Also,is the speedo gear ever been changed,if wrong you MPH will be inaccurate also.

My 80 camaro was originally a 6cyl now its a 350cid. The stock tach read out alot higher than the "Dragon Tach" that I now have installed. Also the Dragon Tach has a switch for 6cyl or 8cyl. If I switch it to 6 its higher. So sounds like a stock tach issue to me.
