View Full Version : Excessive Chatter - Auburn Posi

Hey guys, I was hoping someone could help with a problem I am having.

Two years ago, I rebuilt my 12-bolt and put in an Auburn Posi carrier (it was originally an open rear end). The posi has worked well, but had a tendancy to be a bit noisy on sharp turns. Not a big deal...
I was running Mobil 1 synthetic oil with GM slip additive.

I was at the track today and had an axle seal and bearing get pushed out of the tube (not sure how this happened). There was no noise, but I noticed a leak while in the pits. Anyhow, I pulled the axle and replaced the bearing and seal. Then we bolted it back up and refilled it with gear oil and posi additive (non synth. Costal 90W-140).

For the rest of the day, I have had VERY bad chatter from the carrier. It chatters even if you are on a curve. Anyone have any ideas?

My only thought is that maybe the new oil is the issue?

Sorry for the long post....

You are probably right. I think it's the oil. I have had problems with Auburn posis and usually have to put in 2 bottles of the additive. I had to do that yesterday to a '98 Trans Am with only 19000 miles on it. Try adding another bottle of the GM additive.

Is 90W-140 too thick?

I too run an Auburn that made noise. Can the synthetic and go with organic oil w/ 2 additives.

Well, I purchased 2 bottles of the additive from my friendly GM dealer today and it looks like that did the trick.

You'd never think that 2 little bottles would make that much of a difference, eh?

Thanks for the advice, everyone!
