: Cowl induction and aftermarket intakes.
Shawn Jun 12th, 00, 07:22 AM I've was wondering if anybody has a full functioning cowl induction on a small block that uses an aftermarket intake. The cowl inducting hardware for my 69 Z28 was tossed long ago by a previous owner, but I am considering buying a full kit to make it operational again. I've got a 400 small block and was wondering if anybody has had clearance issues with the air cleaner and foam lip. I have an Edelbrock RPM and a Victor Jr. intake, and it has occured to me that neither of these intakes is the same height as a stock GM intake. Has anyone determined if an aftermarket combination will works with a stock cowl induction system?

DOUG G Jun 12th, 00, 10:16 AM well thats what i thought i would have a problem with too. i have a 400(bored,decked,and so on).i have a stock (flat) hood with a torquer intake, and a drop base air cleaner, not a problem, and with the performer intake (highrise)it rubbed a little. so i see no problem with a cowl hood.
p.s. got an extra one? http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Shawn Jun 12th, 00, 10:26 AM Doug,
Why would you have a cowl induction intake with a stock hood? The part that has me worried is that it's essential the lip around the air cleaner seal against the hood. That way, all of the air is drawn from the cowl opoening at the base of the windshield. Do you actually have a cowl induction or are you just talking about hood clearance in general, which is different from what I'm getting at here.
Thanks,

Jeff H Jun 12th, 00, 10:38 AM I thought that a lot of the aftermarket intakes are very similar to the stock Z28 intake. The Edelbrock Performer I have is real close in height to the Z28 intake. Remember, they also offered the cowl hood with the SS350 so there are 2 different spacer rings. I don't think you should have any problems with an aftermarket intake. You probably need to make sure you have the GM air cleaner base so it is positioned properly.

69-ZMAN Jun 13th, 00, 01:57 AM Correct on the 2 different available spacers if I remember right one is 2 3/4 ins for the non z28 manifold and 2 1/4 ins for the z28.... since the spacer is basically just a round ring of sheetmetal, you could make your own for whatever application you have... the rubber seal will take up quite of bit of variation so you dont have to be exact.... what you do is lay some soft clay on the outside ring of the top of thflat part and shut the hood... then measure the compression of the clay to know your gap for the rubber ring then make the spacer ring to take up the correct distance for the rubber to seal properly..... dont shut the hood with too much force and spring the hinges or bend the hood
DOUG G Jun 13th, 00, 10:45 AM Shawn...just height in general....flat as compared to a cowl.( i have the flat. http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif)

RockyMtnRacer Jun 13th, 00, 04:04 PM I say just go with the high rise tunnel ram and dual quads! Cut a big hole in the hood and chrome it all! It'll look really fast sittin' up on those jackstands.

Shawn Jun 14th, 00, 06:16 AM RockyMtnStumbler-
The Green Meanie will have the last laugh when you need bug and tar remover to peel the molten rubber chunks off of your hood. Maybe that pesky little miss you've developed is from that stack of pennies I accidently dropped in your intake. I guess it could be the leftover cheeseburger I stuffed in there too.
P.S. My new heads came today. It's the beginning of the end for the red moped.
BTW- It's not on jack stands anymore.... Just headless. Get your facts straight.

RickD Jun 16th, 00, 01:36 PM Shawn, where did you get your AFR's?
Shawn Jun 18th, 00, 12:58 PM I bought them directly from AFR. I talked to them quite a bit before I pulled the trigger. I'm pretty convinced their heads flow better than just about anybody else, but they also seemed the most knowledgeable of the people I talked to. Dart pi$$ed me off because they just wanted to ram a set of heads down my throat. I looked at Pro 1's, but they couldn't answer many of my questions with fact, just opinion. I was doing a lot of research on what size heads to get because of the altitude here in CO, and Dart wouldn't even consider the fact that altitude affects head choice. They were ready to sell me a set of 220 CC intake heads for the street???!!! I didn't go with Edelbrock because the RPM's are too tame and too small for my 406. The Victor series are too pricey for what you get. In the end I went with AFR because they flow like mad, right out of the box, no money necessary for additional porting. The intake runners were the size I wanted (195 CC's) and the combustion chambers were the size I wanted. In the end it was an easy decision. Check out some of the combo's they tested with their heads. They have normally aspirated 383's stomping out 500 HP with the 190 CC street heads!!!
