View Full Version : Best plug wires to get are?
Mister G Oct 16th, 04, 08:03 PM I just completed the 396 build for my '67. I have a set of MSD 8.5 mm wires but the 90 boot is hitting on the flange of the header. Being I am going to replace the wires, do any of you have an opinion on a good quality wire set to fit my application?
phel69 Oct 17th, 04, 03:24 AM I use Taylor 8mm with 135* boots. I bought the custom cut to fit set. They work perfect with my headers, no clearance problems at all.
gjohnson Oct 17th, 04, 04:23 AM Could you put on new terminals /boots? Those are supposed to be good wires. If they are fairly new and in good shape maybe you could buy the terminals & boots you need and save a couple dollars.

BillK Oct 17th, 04, 04:44 AM G,
Unless this is a race car, with a very high output ignition system, like a MSD 7, all you really need is a good set of 8mm wires, if that. Any of the name brands will be fine. Moroso makes a set with a "bendable" boot, I think they call them vari-angle. The 135 degree boots usually work also.
Hope this helps,
gmranch Oct 17th, 04, 08:03 AM OEM Delco-Remy plug wires are the best, IMHO. I have tried various aftermarket wires and they only last about a year.
RickD Oct 17th, 04, 08:22 AM There's some good reading at www.magnecor.com (http://www.magnecor.com) regarless of what you buy. Their wires last me about 4 years. The other brands last about a year before showing leakage. Anyway, the information is free!
Mister G Oct 17th, 04, 10:13 AM Thanks for the response, guys. I think I will get the 135 degree form fits. But not sure if I should run them under the header and back or above the header.
DOUG G Oct 18th, 04, 06:02 AM Not 100% sure, but what about shorty plugs? I have a SB and they were the fix. I tried the "cheaper" wires with my MSD6al and had nothing but problems inside 6 months.
JimM Oct 18th, 04, 12:12 PM I've got Taylors also, 8mm spiral cores, 5 years old, still like new. Since I put angle plug heads on awhile ago, 3 boots are in contact with the headers, 1 in hard contact. These things will not melt or burn or even discolor!
RickD Oct 19th, 04, 02:30 AM Jim, have you observed them at night in the dark to confirm no leakage? That's quite good life on those wires in that environment.
JimM Oct 19th, 04, 04:12 AM I'll do that tonight, just to check.
Ignition is accel breakerless with matching chrome coil. Car runs good, pulls hard, steady 15" vacuam at idle
RickD Oct 19th, 04, 09:52 AM Yeah, I'm running the Accel 43100 distributor with their 300+ ignition. Been chasing a slight miss at part throttle. Did the 'darkness' test and saw a nice ( not! ) light show.
69CamaroRacer Oct 19th, 04, 01:02 PM I feel the best are the 8.5 mm MSD super conductors I have used them for years with out any problems!
JimM Oct 20th, 04, 04:21 PM Lightning show complete, and there wasn't any.
It's offical, guys... Taylor Spiral core, 8mm, 135 degree "burnproof" boots, 5 years old, boots IN CONTACT with the header tubes, still perfect.
Best wires I ever bought.
RickD Oct 21st, 04, 02:45 AM Great feedback. Thanks, Jim.
