I bought an original shifter for my 67. My wife absolutely can't comprehend how to shift the Hurst Quarter stick that's in it now. And I also wanted more of a stock look since it's a driver and not intended to be a full on racer. I have looked at this 67 shifter I just bought and figured out it's for a powerglide. What problems if any will I run into to put this in my car??

The shifter should work just fine. As I recall the shifters are the same on PG and TH350 cars in later years, 69,70,71.

If this helps. My 67' came with a PG,and I put a TH350 in.As Steve said the shifter will work fine. The detent will be different though. You can buy a PG to TH350 conversion kit from Shiftworks,if this is a concern. The kit will have a new detent,as well as new shift rod and hardware.Your neutral safety/back-up light switch will also be different,I ordered mine from I belive D&R.

It will work fine as long as you are reasonably careful whenn manually upshifting . There are no detents on the PG shifter or the extra low gear. I drove my converted TH350 for 6 years this way.

to Carl or anyone with experince:

I appreciate the post on my question. I would like to ask a couple more specific questions since I am not big into engine and drivetrain knowledge..yet.
With the PG shifter, I realize the detents will be off, but will I be able to tell what gear it is in by feeling the shifter move into the gear or will it just be a smooth sensation all the way back and forth between second and neutral?

Will reverse and neutral correspond to the notches in the PG detent ring?

The quarter stick currently in the car is probably set for either a 4sp or has the wrong rod, etc. It goes to neutral if you go hardly any past the step for 3rd gear. It doesn't have any sensation of moving out of 3rd, it just lets the engine wind up after moving out of gear. I would rather not have this arrangement with the stock shifter if possible.

Thanks
Lance

Reverse and Neutral will be the same. No problem.

You will easily be able to feel the transmission detents between ALL gears. Just push the button on top of the handle and move the shifter. What you feel is the transmission detents, not the shifter detents. The shifter detents are for safety, the transmission detents give the shifter its feel.

What I mean by being careful is that you must be aware as you manually upshift because there is no positive stop between forward gears as you manually upshift, just the feel of the trans detent. As long as you are aware of this it is no problem at all. It will feel the same as shfting from N to D except you will be pushing the handle forward. No button pushing is necessary because there is no shifter detent.

If you are interested in keeping the stock flavor of the car I think you will be pleased with the outcome.

After re-reading and thinking about your post...

Do you have a reverse manual valve body? Someone plese help me here since I'm not familiar with his aftermarket shifter. If it is a reverse manual body then trans mods may be required to use the stock shifter.

Good point brought up by Carl! As for the shifting issue, you should be able to get a detent kit from Ground Up or Year One that will bolt right in!

Well, I'm not sure about the reverse manual body. I'll see if Hurst has some info from their tech support.

I noticed the shifter detent ring is spot welded. I guess it just gets drilled out. Do you use the replacement as the template for the drilling since the spot welds and holes should line up--if they were trying to save some extra drilling when designing the kit?

Thanks for the help
Lance
