Hi all,

Maybe a simple question I am not sure.

I need to put a bearing set on in my 10bolt.
How do I know other than pulling it apart and measuring the gear if its a 8.2 or an 8.5" gear.

I tried looking for a ID number but had no luck with finding it. The axle has been undercoated.

I have a 69 Coupe. I belive is hasnt been messed with yet. It doenst feel geared up and its still open wheel.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

look at the bottom of the housing, right under the cover, from the rear. if it is an 8.2( which you probably have), it will be round down there. if it is a newer 8.5, it will have 2 "ears" at the bottom that are parallel to the groud.

The 8.2 has a big upside down V on the cover, a 1 1/8 pinion nut and 3/8 ring gear bolts with 9/16 heads. The 8.5 has a smooth cover, a 1 1/4 pinion nut and 7/16 ring gear bolts with 3/4 heads and left hand threads. If it is the original rear end it will be the 8.2 because the 8.5 wasn't used untill '71.

And don't worry! They now make higher gears like 3-73 for the 8.2 so don't get discouraged if its an 8.2 like mine. Thats the last thing I'm doing after my aluminum drive shaft is installed. BTW, does anyone have the 8.2 version of the 3:73? How well is it doing?

Check this site out.
It has a picture of both the 8.2" and the 8.5" rears.

I don't have the 3.73 but my 3.55's are fine after 70+ passes at the track and about 5,000 street miles.
