View Full Version : auto shifter cable
beagle113 Jan 29th, 03, 02:08 PM I am having the hardest time getting the cable to hook up right. I am switching from a powerglide to a turbo 350 in a 68 camaro and my cable bracket wont line up. can someone tell me what i might be doing wrong or give me some helpful advice? anything would be appreciated.
thanks
BPOS Jan 29th, 03, 02:19 PM I've done this swap. The T350 uses a different bracket than the glide. I think it is still available from GM. If not, an outfit called "Shiftworks" can set you up with what you need. The cable is the same for both.
beagle113 Jan 29th, 03, 03:29 PM i have bought a new bracket.
CA420 Jan 30th, 03, 09:43 AM What do you mean by it won't line up right? Please explain. I too have done this swap and had no issues. I used the shift works kit but I still loosened the other end at the shifter to get it where I wanted it.

beagle113 Jan 30th, 03, 12:43 PM The bracket I have is supposed to mount on the side of the trans. When i hook the cable up with the bracket on, th cable is in a bind and it wont shift.
BPOS Jan 30th, 03, 01:10 PM Make sure that the bracket you are using actually should bolt to the side of the trans. I have seen some (mine!) for a T350 that uses two of the pan bolts. As I recall, the original GM bracket bolts to the side above the pan bolts, like you are trying to do.
Make sure that you have a matched set...cable mount bracket AND gear selector bracket either should both be GM or both aftermarket. Is it possible you have one GM and the other aftermarket?
beagle113 Feb 3rd, 03, 04:39 PM I still havent been able to hook it up. I called the guy that i got the bracket from and he said that on the turbo-350, the bracket mounts on the side. in the books, it shows it on the bottom of the pan. I do know that i have the GM gear selector and i think the cable bracket is a repo. He also said that i might have the wrong cable. My cable is 30 inches long. does anyone know how long the first gen. camaro cable should be?
beagle113 Feb 4th, 03, 02:34 PM lets see if this info helps people understand my problem. When i hook everything up the way it is supposed to be, the shifter is in drive but the trans is actually in park.
Rob.Canada Feb 5th, 03, 03:46 AM On the side of the shifter, is a 5/16 adjuster bolt, loosen bolt, push shifter forward to Park postion , tighten bolt.
On your cable end at the tranni, do not tighten cable down, It has to pivot, I used a 1/4 in bolt, tighten down tight on Trans lever, slide cable over bolt, use double nut.
Hope it works out for you.
