Should I use a tranny jack or is it doable manually? Looks like minimally a clutch replacement. See my Troubleshooting post 'Did my clutch or tranny die'!

The M20 weighs somewhere in the neigborhood of 70-75 lbs. It's not all that heavy. With my last car I pulled out a T10 and put in a M20 manually. My car was on jack stands and I more or less bench pressed it in place. If your clutch is lined up right, it is really easy to put it in place. When pulling it, you will more or less get a feel for the weight before it comes completely out.

I use a floor jack. You'll have to keep it steady on there, but you can get the input shaft up into the clutch disc. You might end up bench pressing it up and down a little bit to wiggle it in, but the floor jack works wonders!

2 things greatly reduce the effort such that the weight alone is not a controlling factor:
1) properly align the clutch disc using an alignment tool or separate input shaft, and
2) cut the heads off 2 duplicate transmission mounting bolts and insert them in the upper holes of the bellhousing before lifting the trans into place. Then insert the bottom bolts and replace the uppers with the correct bolts.
If you do these 2 things, you will only have to lift the transmission once. Even with a jack, you will likely have to lift the trans to get it into the disc.

Always much safer with a tranny jack. However I remove and replace them by myself without one. The key is you have to stay directly beneath the tranny while lifting it into place, if you try to work with it over you head with your arms extended you're going to drop it, like I did once and your tendancy is to try to catch it, which of course there is no way you'll do. Crushed a finger when the thing came down on one finger. If working beneath it doesn't sound like your thing, than get a tranny jack.

LOL....I just swapped a T-10 for an M-20 tonite in My garage...Yup....bench press it....worse part is rolling it up on Your chest....I could tell I wasn't 20 ys old anymore http://www.camaros.net/forum/rolleyes.gif, but it went up and in pretty easy with arms and a little knee assist.....Good Luck...

I used a couple of long head bolts for this by rounding off the hex heads. pdq67
