View Full Version : 4L80E install thought and recommendations
mikestr Jul 12th, 02, 07:07 AM I got a quote from my tranni guy I've known for years. I want to swap out my TH400 for a 4L80E.
He quoted me $4000CAD TAX IN ($2500USD) for the complete swap. It includes:
- 4L80E tranni
(Built will all the best parts, red Reybestos clutch pads, shift kit, deep pan, bullet proof guarateed to easily handle 600HP+, all tricked out and special modifications he develeloped and passed on to General Motors a few years ago to make the tranni better)
- New Stall Converter 3000/3500
- Full computer module with adjustable knobs for shift points etc.
- new Chromolly drive shaft and large yoke
- kickdown switch for carb linkage
-oil dip stick
-completely installed out the door.
He also gave me 1 year warranty on this performace tranni.
What are your thoughts first off, maybe your past experiences with this tranni and what you think about the price?
Thanks in advance.

Everett#2390 Jul 12th, 02, 07:33 AM Sounds reasonable if you install an extra trans oil cooler.
How much does he do one for a truck, meaning, a bolted yoke rather than a slip joint? This is ready to ship out the door.
You could go to Jet Performance site and check, they do the same thing, but, no install.

I live just 15minutes north of Toronto, Canada, if you want I can email you his phone # and call him directly.
Thanks.
mikestr Jul 12th, 02, 10:03 AM Anyone know the weight difference between the Th400 and the 4L80E?
Thanks.
camcojb Jul 12th, 02, 10:24 AM That sounds very low to me. I've never seen a stock 4L80E with the computer and converter for that price, much less built and installed. I'd jump on it if that's the way you want to go.

I give him a lot of business, so he helps me on the price. PLUS I found that performance work is cheaper here than in the USA.
mikestr Jul 13th, 02, 12:35 PM Any other opinions?
joesmith69 Jul 13th, 02, 01:41 PM That's one hell of a deal. I work for a major performance shop, and even with my discounted pricing I can't get a built 4L80e and converter for that, not to mention the driveshaft/computer/install.
JUMP on it.

Yes, I've been getting that response from everyone. I've been dealing with this guy for a while now. I like his work because he is very miticulous (sp?) and does not cut corners to save money. He stand behind his work, plus a 1 year warranty, unheard of in performance places around here!
I was thinking, since it is a good deal to upgrade to the BLUE REYBETOS clutches and make it even more bullet proof. I believe he said another $300CAD about $190USD.
What are your thoughts about the tranni, I heard that it had been reported to drop tourque #s by as high as 25% because of the weight! Is this true?!
boodlefoof Jul 13th, 02, 06:27 PM It is a pretty heavy transmission. What kind of motor are you running? I'm not saying that it is a bad deal on the trans, but maybe it is more than you need? If you aren't running a real powerhouse of a motor, maybe you could get by with a TH200-4R and save some dough and not go through the installation difficulties of the computer tech and the size of that trans? If I recall, it is a tall transmission and might require some floor massaging.
pdq67 Jul 13th, 02, 06:44 PM It should be just like a 4" to 5" longer TH400! pdq67

I am running a 350HP 454ci, I also plan to rebuild the engine to push 500HP straight motor + 150 shot NOS next spring. So I want to be prepared. What I like about this tranni...
1. O.D
2. adjustable shift point
3. converter lock
joesmith69 Jul 14th, 02, 06:51 AM A 700 or 200 R4 tranny could be built to take what your talking about. For a lot less money. The 4L80 is awesome, but I wouldn't bother unless your making 700+ hp.

mikestr Jul 14th, 02, 02:25 PM The more and more I think about this I am kinda undecided on this tranni. I am told from many people not to go with this tranni BUT with a built 700R4 or 200 instead.
Now I'm confused! HELP!
