Going to look at a fresh 355 long block this evening that is supposed to be built with forged crank and pistons. Is there any visual clue that would verify a forged vs cast crank with only the ends showing on a fully assembled long block. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me before 4:30pm central.

If it's a pre-86 block with 2-piece rear main, you should be able to see either the wide forging or narrow casting line on the back crank flange. Doesn't always work, though. What's the engine out of? Most 4-bolt with steel cranks are out of either high performance or truck applications.

Its a pre 86 truck block, not sure if it is a stock crank or aftermarket.

Todd,
The casting numbers are different on the forged cranks.
