I have recently had a problem with gas appearing in my oil and it was recommended that I check the fuel pump for a tear in the diaphragm. My question is can I remove the fuel pump without having to drain the oil and/or worry about oil leakign from the place where the pump attaches?

Most of the oil is in the pan when the engine's not running. You might get a drop or two when you take the pump out. Be sure to slide the push rod back up against the cam before you try to put the pump back in.

Yes you can remove the pump without draining the oil. There shouldn't be much oil (if any) that will leak out. Not sure what block you are dealing with but, if you have bolt holes in the front below the water pump, the upper one can help you quite a bit. As mentioned above push the fuel pump push rod all the way in, (rmove the short bolt that is in the hole) and install a longer bolt. This will hold the push rod in place until you get the new pump installed. Don't forget to remove the long bolt and re-install the short one (you need the short one in place to prevent an oil leak, but not long enough to touch the push rod). If you don't have the hole available use grease on the push rod to hold it in place.
