I want to replace the main and rod bearings without completely going through my motor. What would be the best (?proper?) way to go about this?

Thanks,
Mike

Pull her out, put her on a motor stand up side down AND have at it!!

You shouldn't have to touch anything on top doing it this way...

But be careful taking the gaskets off so that nothing falls down inside b/c if some does, then you might have to roll her back over and blow her out with an air hose???

OR do it the hard way on your back with the motor still in the car........

Another vote to pull it. Bearing work is far too critical to chance missing something working on your back.

oh yeh, its coming out and onto the motor stand for sure. Just as soon as hunting season is over. Biggest concern is making sure I get the right size bearings, but I suppose once the main and rod caps are off it should be easy to mic the crank. The crank shouldn't need anything but we'll see....

Most bearings will have stamped on them what oversize it is. I know my Federal Mogul bearings do.
