View Full Version : Strange things found during restoration

Just wondering what are some of the stranger things that you have come across in a restoration, either from the factory or a previous owner.

I don't remember anything particulary weird about my camaro, but we did find a spare door lock with key inside the door on the vette. (The power windows worked much better after it was removed.) And, we found that the front fender on Brian's truck had been welded to the cab !!

What's your story ?

When I had my dash apart replacing venting etc I found 3 pens, a dime, a empty match book and a ton of lint down the defroster tubes...

When I removed the rear door panel (by the way have you noticed the rear quarter interior panels are refered to as door panels even though there is no door back there?)anyway I found a plastic flashlight with quite corroded batteries that had GM stamped on it. Also found a receipt from a McDonalds somewhere in Sacramento, CA for $1.96. It was for a double cheeseburger, regular fries and a medium coke dated sometime in 1972. Lastly I found the nest made by the varmits that pooped all over the seats. It was in the heater box.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Had my door panels off a while back and instead of the brown paper type material that is used to keep the panels from getting wet, the previous owner had used some plastic package wrap that said "Tennessee Country Cured Ham". It was printed over and over with a picture of a big ham.

Maybe that's why my car is as slow as a pig.

I found a bag of weed stuffed under the dash of a car I bought at a Police auction for a 100 bucks. I think it was an old Delta 88, I can't remember for sure. My memory hasn't been very good since that discovery. Did I mention it was good weed? http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif Just kidding Dennis!!!!!! I found out that my recently purchased 1967 was a 1968 stolen from Los Angeles in June of 1981 and never recovered... how's that for a discovery! It all turned out well, I got the car back and the judge waived over 800 bucks in Impound Fees since we (tag team folks of camaros.net) figured out it was stolen, after both the DMV & local police said it was fine. Thanks again foks!

I bought my 67 from a guy who owned a used car lot. He couldn't sell it on the lot and he didn't sell it to me the first time I looked at it. He wanted way too much. I waited and watched and finally he dropped the price, so I made my offer, which he took. When I got the car home and cleaned it up, I found a high school ID, parking permit, and an english paper. Apparently, a high school kid owned the car before the guy I bought it
from.

I laughed my A$$ off when I found the paper. It was a book report and he got an F! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

The RS had been wrecked when I bought it and there was glass all over the back floor. Funny thing was no glass was broke in the car! Years later when I finally pulled the rear side panel off behind drivers door I saw more glass, and the entire metal structure in that area just hashed. Can't believe the window works good. Looked carefully at the quarter panel from the inside and saw no cuts or bondo signs. Everything looked solid on the outer sheetmetal. Could NOT figure out what the hell happened here until I saw the gal I got the car from. She say's "Oh yea, that's were the stop sign went through the car and punctured the passenger seat!" She say's, "That sucker almost got me, yep, speared the car good". http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif They cut in a new quarter, that's why I didn't see any outside signs of damage. The stories some of these cars could tell!!

I found a little clear plastic mouse in the AC/heater box when I took it out for the new Vintage air unit this past summer. The little fellow looked quite original. Could it have been the first happy meal toy? Maybe I should take it to the antique roadshow and see what it's worth--being that it's in excellent condition and all.....

Back in 1978 when I was a teenager I found a 1960 Nixon for President pin ( the kind you stick on your coat)under the rear seat of my 55 chevy. I threw it in the top of my tool box were it sat for a couple years. They one day while cleaning I chucked it in the trash.

I found a Shell credit receipt under the dash. $5.00 bought 11.2 gallons of premium. I figure it must have been in the early 70s. It has the license plate number & State (CA) on it. I've tried to track that down with no luck. Privacy laws in CA prevent giving out any info.

i had a 68, it sat outside before i bought it, and for alittle while after. so one evening i thought i would push it in the garage and look it over good. so i took a da to the rear quarters to see how much mud and paint it had on it. well i da'd for a few minutes and when i stopped the car was still humming???? about two seconds later quite a few very upset bumble bees started to emerge from everywhere. I did'nt know wether to sh.. or run. so i grabed some fast drying prymer and began to fog my garage, it worked pretty good, it would get on there wings and dry and down they went. so i spent some time spraying and dancing (stepping on them as they went down). slowly the fog disapeated and i did'nt have any stings. that's one thing i dont care to ever find in a car again. I knew a guy who worked at a body shop. He found wads of money, drugs, even a severed finger. Finding drugs seems common. Imagine getting pulled over and a cop who finds a hidden stash of drugs in your car. Scary.

I had a friend tell me he bought an old Corvette to restore, when the drivers door was taken apart, a credit card was found inside.
The name on it was John Wayne!
The story goes, that John Wayne would tuck the card into the gap between the side window and door where the service station attendant would be able to easily grab it.

David -

John Wayne was one of the "celebrities" selected by Chevrolet to receive one of the first 300 '53 Corvettes built at Flint (to give the car media exposure in Hollywood). He drove the car for about two months and then sold it, as he was too tall to be comfortable in the car.

During my resto I found:

- a bunch of junk including a zippo lighter in the defroster vent

- a few windshield clips under the carpet. they were brand new and were probably dropped by a worker as it went down the line?

- the letters "BBLU" written on the firewall. My car is LeMans Blue.

I have worked on two older projects, one a 73 Dodge Challenger and found two snake skins up in the dash & was hoping not to find the ones that shedded them and then in a 50 plymouth I found a real live snake. I sold the car to a salvage yard and never turned a wrench on it. I don't care for snakes as you can tell.

I used to have a '67 Firebird and I found barrets, tweezers and lipstick in the heater box when I replaced the heater core. I found a bunch of old change under the rear seat. I thought finding the stuff was pretty cool. I am looking forward to doing the heater core in my '68 in hopes that there will be something neat in the dash. There is still confetti from my wedding 6 years ago finding its way outta the interior. Neat thread ~ John

Found three goodies in my '68 so far -

The registration for a '72 VW bug, expired in '74 under the rear seat. I almost mailed it back to the guy.

A mouse nest in the heater core box. Obviously occupied for some time - fortunately the mouse was gone. I wondered why I couldn't get the thing to defrost right.

And finally, a little hand held electric fan that plugs into your cigarette lighter with leather blades. Looked 1950's vintage.

I look forward to seeing what I will find when I tear out my interior in the future. So far, all I have found is some money (there was a $10 bill in the ash tray!), a leather glove up in the dash, and a pocket knife under the rear seat. Oh yeah, and a crapload of leaves in my air vent ducts.

My dads partner had a station wagon. The car had a noise in the rear from day one. The car was back at the dealer over and over, but the never found the rattle. Years later, the wagon was rear ended. Totaled the car. In the rear quarter they found a large nut with a tag on it. Hand written on the tag was, "It took you long enough to find me."

Must have been built on a Monday!

I also read a story about a guy that bout a 69 RS/SS and when he stripped it down he found that someone had taken coke cans and welded them to the car and then gobbed tons of bondo over them to fill in all the holes in the body. It seems most of the old cars had marijuana in them. It reminds me of the time in 1971 I was working at the local chevy dealer in the parts dept and driving the wrecker part time at night, when I got a call from the highway patrol to Impound a 69 camaro at 2:00 a.m. when I got there they were unloading a trunk full of freshcut marijuana plants. I ask them how they caught the guys and they said they had a couple of plants hanging out of the trunk when they pulled in behind them! Talk about stupid!

Besides the normal trash, money, and mouse nests, when I took the left front fender off my '68 I found the biggest screw driver I've ever seen. Thing is at least 2.5 feet long. Looked pretty old but a quality tool. It's amazing how often I seem to reach for the "Big Johnson" when a pry bar or other tools just won't quite work. When I took the interior out of my nova I found some sort of final inspection sheet where they noted several small things that needed corrected before it left the factory. Kind of neat because I checked them and some of them still looked like they were not quite right. They must have just said the heck with it and sent it on out.

I bought the '67 SS in '1979 when I was 21. I bought it from a blonde who was in her mid thirties. I could tell both the car and her had some mileage on them (but in the right light they looked pretty good...) Anyway, during the resto in the '90 I found;
dead cockroaches, dead joint roaches, a roach clip, small change. I also had these marks in the headliner in the rear seat. I figured it out one day... I'll bet they were heel marks! (I knew she was wild!) I also found courtesy of GM, a mint ignition key for my car.

A co-worker of mine bought a early 80's dodge short stepside pickup for his son from a guy in the next town over. The seller was real proud of it...brand new rebuilt 318 and auto trans, beautiful black paint and aluminum wheels. The guy was so proud of the fact that he built the engine himself. Anyway, my co-worker drove the truck for a couple of weeks to make sure everything worked ok...the engine started knocking horrible and lost all oil pressure. Since he isnt much of a mechanic, I got to check it out...I filled a huge coffee can with leaves and twigs that I dug out of the lifter valley alone...you could tell the engine had a fairly fresh rebuild on it because all of the gaskets looked brand new as did the piston tops, but every bearing, journal, and cylinder wall was literaly burned black from lack of oil. There was a handful of acorns in the oil pan, and the oil pump pickup was packed full of leaves. Not only that, the guy had used RTV blue silicon on all the exhaust ports to seal the huge mismatch between the stock 318 manifolds and the 360 exhaust gaskets. Let me tell you...blue rtv turns to concrete when it gets that hot! This guy was a real 'shade tree' mechanic! Needless to say, my co-worker got to spend another good chunk of change for a new engine.

In our sons '80 T/A we found exactly $5.00 in change, a Kmart receipt for $8.68, a few bobbie pins, and a 110 photo negative of four pics. We had this developed and it was from a wedding party. In a couple of the photos the same couple showed up and we kinda figured this might have been the former owners. Judging from the clothes, hair styles, and general 'look' of the people in the pics it looked like they were taken in the early '80's. Found two build sheets in our '81 Z that came from Van Nuys. One was for our Z and the other was for a V6 auto sport coupe that according to the VIN was 17 ahead of our car. Neat bits of history!

Clean your cars, i once got busted for a "clear cellophane bag that looks to contain marijuana residue" the cop's own words. The bag was found WAY under the driver's seat, I'm not a saint, but it was not mine, and it was expensive, all said and done, i think it cost me about 600 bucks
The reason the cop searched the car was because he noticed there were a few empty beercans on the passanger floor, and I was under age, again, I'm no saint

After a 1/2 dozen trips back to the dealer, one of the mechanics pulled the panel off the rear door and low and behold, some one on the assembly line tied a string around a Coke bottle and hung it in the cavity. After a 1/2 dozen trips back to the dealer, one of the mechanics pulled the panel off the rear door and low and behold, some one on the assembly line tied a string around a Coke bottle and hung it in the cavity. WOW, what pride huh!!

thats too funny, 68softly. what a mean joke. the only weird things i found was when i was stripping some paint off an old mustang and found a bunch of bondo patches. well i got curious and pulled off the driver's quarter pannel and drivers door interior to find that they were bullet holes. but other than that, just the usuals like old change, pens, bottle caps, oh and a playboy from 1979. i shoulda kept it cause it would be a collectable now.

I found some old bones under the back seat. Someone pitched a bunch of old chicken wing bones and 13 baby back rib bones under the seat many years ago and I did not find them until I started the resto. The mice had gotten to them at one point and there was a lot of mouse turds to clean up along with some very clean bones. The car had been off the road for many years before I started to tear into it. I have no recolection of which of my buddies did it. It must have been many years ago.

I once found a cotton glove stuck between the steering column and a support bracket. Looked like someone on the line bolted the steering column on, got their glove stuck, and just pulled there hand out and sent it on.

Along with the old coins and such I found a gold pin off of a graduation tassel. The year was 1974. This is my third first generation Camaro. The first two I sold in the 70's.

I graduated high school in 1974 so the pin now hangs on a clip next to my toolbox in the garage.

My wife said this car was meant for me!

Geeze!! I found nothing cool in mine! There was an empty pack of Marlboro cigerettes and a bunch of rust along with some mouse turds. I did find some areas that had been repaired. I am thinking it may have been in a slight accident --either that or a big spot of rust was removed! The tags say the car was originally blue which is what color it is but the front clip appears to have been white with blue strips. Very curious!!

I have found all the usual stuff, fishing lures, coins, keys, tools. One of the funniest was a 31 Model A I did where they had welded a License plate to the bottom of the quarter to "repair" rust.

I don't know if this counts but I found my own wallet once. My dad had (my brother now has it) a 1955 F-100 since 1965. About 1975 I lost my wallet while doing some "tune up" work out on the road. Around 1990 I was changing the radiator and found my wallet behind the grille! I left it exactly how I found it and have it put away. It had my first drivers license, about six dollars, and some $3.25 checks from my newspaper customers! It was like a time capsule.

One day I would love to meet Joe. This guy plastered mud over an inch thick behind the rear window. Had to take a chisel to it. This guy probably took my build sheet when he hacked the floor pans; among other things. No luck finding F--- auto repair in the phone book either.

Great thread. When the trunk extensions were being replaced on my 69, a vintage budweiser can was found between the drop off and rear quarter. I had a Duster, new, that always had a rattle in the driver's door. I pulled the panel and found 'another' bud can. Guy must have made the rounds!

But the most interesting was the clothing left by the guy's girlfriend(?). A size small long T-shirt, size 5 heels, and a 34C quarter cup bra.

My buddy just said that the strangest thing he ever found in a car was the woman he ended up marrying http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif. This fool was here talking about how one night in the mid 70' he went to the drive-in to see some movie called "Jaws", says he went to the concession stand for some popcorn, and when he got back, she was in his car going through the glove compartment http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif Man says that he beat her a$$ and both of them were taken to the stationhouse, from there they both made up and started dating afterwards http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif (He's been drinking so I really don't know if he is telling the truth or not, but the way he told it had me laughing all over the place) http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Three bullet holes in the left quarter panel right behind the drivers door. These weren't holes used to pull out a dent, they were bullet holes when viewed from inside the quarter. Kind of makes you wonder about the cars history. By the way the car was never a steet car, it was a drag car from day one in 69 and retired in 93. Spent most of it's time on the West Coast. I'm betting it was just shot at while parked somewhere by someone who didn't know any better.

This is a great thread!!!!!!

I found a used condom as well as some German coins dated to 1973. When I bought my car, I was told it was bought new in Germany and stayed there till about the early 70's. Of course, it was owned by someone in the service. I will pass these to the new owner whenever I sell my "foreign" Camaro.

It wasn't a restoration, but we towed a Trans Am that was involved in an accident. By law, we must do an inventory of all items in the car.

In the rear compartment, just sitting out in space, was a bag with several ounces of what appeared to be a well known Columbian export....yes...we turned it over to the police officer...BTW, he was standing right there.

I have had my 67 since 73, but had not driven it since 77 according to the last plate that was still hanging on it. Two years ago I decided to take it out of storage and restore it. I stated like most people by stripping it, starting with the interior. In the counsel compartment I had left alot of papers, things like registration and insurance. Mixed in with them was a letter that was written to my self and a good friend of mine named Butch. It was written by a summer time girlfriend and her best friend, who was Butch's girlfriend. They had written the letter while traveling back to Kentuckey after spending the summer at my parent cottages in Michigan. It was a pretty interesting letter and typical for a couple of teenage girls that had fallen in love and had to leave their boyfriends. The really touching thing about the letter was that shortly after they had left for the summer Butch was killed when his brand new Camaro was struck from behind and burst into flames.

But, getting out my trusty calculator, and by chance, looking at his drivers license(His name was 'Ralph', and yes, he was also licensed to ride a motorcycle), and the last time that the car had been registered to the time that the trunk pan had been replaced , doing some simple addition and subtraction, he should of died(poor soul)sometime around 1979/1980. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

My car has 103000 on the ticker of which I put about 20000. I am the third owner. I worked at a gas station and bought it from a lady that would come in for gas. I would alway try to buy it from her when she came in for a fill up, remember full service gas staions. She must not have taken me seriously becouse one day she came in and when I asked her she said her husband had just bought her a new car and they were going to trade it in on the new one. That night I called her husband and he said I could have it if I gave him what he was getting on trade. I barrowed the money from my boss since I didnt have all of the $1000.00 and I knew better than to ask my dad(he did find out soon enough and wasnt to happy, he didnt make me sell it but he wouldn't let me drive it for almost a year).

The letter is pretty special for me for the sentimental value. The girls that wrote it mention both Butch's Z and my 67 in it. I will cherish it for many years. It was a very memorable summer both good and bad!

Yes! They are the bane of my existence. Here in the nearly-communist state of OR, we cannot pump our own gas. We have to have a toothless professional pump our gas. I'd easily pay $0.20/gallon more just to have the ability to pump my own gas. I could write a 10-page essay on the subject, but suffice it to say that it takes about 10x longer to get a fill-up and they constantly spill gas (because they are obsessed with topping off the tank).

The truly mind-boggling thing for me is that Oregonians have had the opportunity to change the law ... but don't?! OK, I'm done. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

so, they actually call those guys professionals? is it a law? and they make you pay 20 cents more a gallon for him to pump it as part of his wages? thats ridiculous. i used to have a full service gas station down the street from my house, but they shut it down about 6 years ago. they did everything like fill up the tank, check oil, wiper blades, wiper fluid, ect... we did'nt pay extra for the gas, at least i dont think, but we would always tip the guy when he was done.

You misunderstand me. I would pay 20 cents more if I could pump my own gas -- it's such an inconvenience and such an annoyance, that I'd pay more to do it myself!

Otherwise, yes, it's a law here -- no civilians can pump their own fuel. I think it's a $500 fine. It protects jobs. Apparently, every state in the union has figured out how to phase out gas station attendants (without the unemployment rate exploding) except Oregon.

The attendants don't do anything but pump the gas. Very rarely, they'll wipe a windshield.

The one caveat is that they generally let me pump my own gas into my 67 (a courtesy they typically extend to classic car owners and motorcyclists).
