my 400t is sliping in high gear, doesn't seem to slip in 1 and 2 ,has a shift kit(B&M)and shifts hard from 1 to 2 but slipps real bad in to 3 and I can sweep the tach in 3 when curising.
so does it sound like something I could fix or should sent it to the shop for rebuild.

also has a 2500 holeshot torque converter.

thanks!

Not a TH400 but...

I was undecided about rebuilding the transfer case in my 4x4. So I decided to order a how to video from these guys http://www.technicalvideos.com/ . I am very pleased with the quality and detail of the instruction and consider it money well spent. I'm still undecided about tackling the job because of the complexity but now I know what's involved. Even if I wind up hiring it done, I'll know if I'm getting treated fair. Just something for you to consider.

I used to work at a truck shop rebuilding manual trans. but I have never tried an auto trans and as usual money is tight.
also if your trtansfer case is for a manual trans go for it not really much in there but a few gears and a chain(although some are gear to gear)

good luck and thanks for the link!!!

I don't think anyone can give you an answer since it depends highly on your mechanical aptitude and resources. I might recommend getting an old THM400 to tear down and give you the feel of it. Take notes of bolt lengths, spring colors, thrust washer orientations etc. Digital photos are good too. Great thing about working on a junker is that if you hose it, you aren't out a bunch of money and might be able to sell the hard parts to a local rebuilder if you decide to back out. As far as automatics go, I'd rate the THM350 as the most simple, and THM400 as the next most simple. Tool requirements aren't much beyond a good set of snap ring plyers, screw drivers, combination wrenches, and a few home-made tools. The videos are a good way to get aquainted as well. You'll definately want to spend several hours boning up. Have you ever rebuilt an engine before? If you're concious of the cleanliness requirements and tolerance measurements required for an engine rebuild, then you might just do fine on a transmission rebuild.

I did my TH350 myself using the B&M Trick Kit (the $225 rebuild one). They included good directions and the trans worked good when I was done. It wasn't too hard at all, although I'll admit I made a couple mistakes that I had to fix later on.

If you get an instruction video or book and don't need complete instructions, you might like the rebuild kit that Coan sells for $120. I used the Coan kit when I re-rebuilt my trans this fall.

ps. If you were wondering I ran into trouble with the oil pump - I had it resurced on a mill and the finish wasn't smooth enough to seal the pump halves - created a leak and I eventually toasted the direct drive clutches.

well I did a complete rebuild of my 400t and just got it running again on sunday,no leaks seems to shift up on stands, but haven't taken it down the road yet(still working on the rear shock towers).

I wouls sujest any with mechanical background not hesitate to give a rebuilt a try it didn't seem has complacated as I thought it would be,just take your time and be clean,I used six cans of brake cleans on the job.

I now have a completely new/rebuilt drive train! graemlins/hurray.gif

Congratulations! Its cool to hear from someone else thats not afraid to tackle a new/difficult job. thanks for the follow up.

My re-rebuilt TH350 is working real nice too, after a couple hundred miles and a few 1/4 passes I think it has a clean bill of health.

Sounds like a direct clutch issue if it slips in 3rd. If interested, I can sell you the TCI Pro Super kit for $175 shipped to your door (Summit has them for $179.95 plus a $7.95 handling charge, or $187.90 in reality). It has all the same parts to make your trans like the TCI Streetfighter, including clutches, steels, and the valve body parts to make it manual/automatic.

the direct clutches were not only burnt they were polished and kind of cupped too.
it's all new now though! :D

My one suggestion: Keep the parts in order on a clean bench or sheet of plywood, clean each part, then put back in order on bench, then reassemble.
