I am getting ready to change the oil for the first time on my 99,000 mile 68 and have been seeing this Valvoline commercial for engine oil for high mileage older cars. Just wanted some feedback and opinions. Thanks!

IMHO, it's a way to separate you from your money and them to increase their bottom line.

I know a guy who works for a research institute that amoung other things tests motor oils. Did you know that if a motor oil lasts too long it's considered a failure? Afterall, if you don't change it every few months then the big motor oil companies would loose a huge chunk of revenue. So I wouldn't put it past them to do whatever they can to maximize market share. But I must admit I don't know much about the high milage oils other than quaker state sells theirs in a red bottle. :D

just think- if yo use Amsoil and their filter setup, you'd only have to change the oil 4 times in that amount of miles (so they claim).

From what I was reading (and I am not the expert here) the high mileage oil was a ploy to try and grow oil sales, since they have stayed flat for a long time. It worked pretty well for them too. I think that there are some different additives from regular oil, but I'm not sure if it's any better for your engine.

Personally I like the synthetics like amsoil, which would work great in a well maintained high mileage motor. The detergents in amsoil could actually clean some of the old sludge deposits, which could cause oil leaks (as it was the old sludge buildup that was helping the wornout gaskets to seal).
