I was given a complete 427 BB out of a 70`s model 5 ton truck. They call it a tall block, can you tell me why they call it a tall block??????and what can I do with this motor?????I have heard they use to use then in stock car in the 60`s and 70`s because of the low end troke they have. I would like to use it on the street..so give me your input. thank`s

Joey:

The engine is called a tall block because the piston deck height is much taller than the passenger car to give it a lower C/R. These particular engines are the most sought after by your big block Hot Rodders due to the fact that they are easy to stroke and will accommodate longer rods to get more cubes.

when you go to buy a intake, either make sure that the intake you get is for a tall block or you can buy spacer's that go between a standard intake and the block, to seal up the gap.

they are .400" taller because the pistons have 4 rings instead of 3. you also have to have longer push rods and a longer distributor. standard headers also may not fit. you may be better off with a standard deck height because these parts are going to cost more money and be more difficult to mess with.

thanks gear head....well i don`t need any parts , it came with every thing from the clutch ***. to the fuel pump and the holly carb. and the distributor.
I didn`t know they had 3 rings...Thanks again.

It may have come with everything, but the components in the engine aren't hi-po. So you'll need new pistons (the 4 ring ones are *heavy* and huge), cam, etc.
I don't think standard BB pistons will work. Finding help when you have problems will also be a problem.

I have heard that these engines have a 396 bore (4.1xx) and a crank from a 454 (4.00). ...Not sure though.

If this is the case, you'll probably get lots of low end, but not sure on the top end.

If its a 427 it will have the dimensions of a regulaur 427 except for the deck height. You can buy regulaur 427 pistons, but your going to have to get .400 longer rods for it to work. And if you have looked that up in a catalog there not giving the pistons or the rods away. I dont know why there so expensive to build, even after they stoped making them in 69.

I also have got a 427 tall block. It is just the bare block that has been jet washed with virgin bores etc.. What could a guy sell this thing for? It's of no use to me.

Guys,

The engine is not a loss. You can build it many different ways. 1) You can put a 454 crank and pistons using the 6.535 rods .400rds which is longer than stock 2) You can use stock 427 pistons and crank with the 6.535 rods or 3) You can stroke the fool out of it up to 4.75 and use the corresponding rods and pistons. 4) You can use either of the cranks and stock rods and use the corresponding pistons to meet the deck. check the specs here and you be the judge. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.mortec.com/borstrok.htm
