This is me in Apr of 1980 holding my younger sisters first born at moms house. I had been married and divorced (sold my first Camaro to keep the family car running)

http://chevelles.com/showroom/DjD/hair.jpg

Jimmy Carter was President, the U.S. embassy in Iran was being held hostage. there was a big trade embargo and the company I worked for left million dollar telephone switches sitting in crates on docks. I was contemplating taking a temp assignment in Iran to be part of the installation crew. Never got the chance after that. The summer olympics were boycotted that yeare as well I think over 60 countries joined the U.S. in the Moscow boycott. In May Mt. St. Helens blew it's top and covered many states in ash..

What do you remember? I thing Billy Joel's Glass Houses was one of my fav albums back then...

Stationed at the Naval Station Treasure Island, California. Lived in Concord, CA. Owned a 75 Chevy Monza 2+2 with a small V8 in it. Also had a 76 GMC Jimmy and a 1980 Harley Davidson Low Rider.

Stayed at Treasure Island until 1985 and then moved to the Naval Air Station in Lemoore, CA. Lived in Visalia. The Monza went to the ex-wife, I kept the Jimmy and the Harley got stolen. Met my current wife and we are still together today (best move I made).

I had just gotten married the fall of 79, this pic was taken a month before that, hehe http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
Had a small home, wife, no kids and 70 chevelle convertible in the yard that I sold due to no money to fix it up. The economy was starting to slide with interest rates going up. By 1983 home rates were 16%.
But all in all, we always find a way to survive dont we?

I was a freshman in highschool. I think my biggest concerns were zits, chicks and that the seniors were going to be kicking my ass!! I would gladly trade those days for the concerns I have today!!! I remember listening to Kasey Kaysum (sp) on Sunday afternoos and hanging out at the bowling ally on saturday nights until it got dark so we could walk down to the drive in movie and sneak in. Too young to drive but had friends with "school permits" who could drive at 14 -we thought we were so cool!! Wow, when I think of all the stupid stuff we did -- What a bunch of dorks we were!!! Good times --yes, good times!!

I don't really remember, but they tell me I was sh***ing my pants a lot, crying, and starting to play with rocks, worms, and anything else I could get my hands on. I beilieve it was also around that time that I flushed all my moms jewlery down the toilet.

I haven't had an accident in a number of years, but I still play with rocks and worms and cry when I don't get my way. I waste a lot of money, so I guess you could say I'm still flushing money down the toilet. I guess some things will never change http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

I spent the whole year in The Rep. of Panama crusing around in a 69 El Camino SS/396 that i could not bring back to the maninalnd since I had no proof it ever orginalted from the US and came through Panamian customs. Yeah right a 69 Chevy not from the states at this time??? Instead of just leaving it there for some Custom senior offical to let take it and enjoy I returned back to Howard Air Force Base and parted the car out. Anything that couldnt be sold or given away got torched. overall had a great time in the country.

I was just out of high school and just met my wife to be. I had a '69 pace car for a daily driver, was working crappy jobs trying to figure out what I was going to do with the rest of my life.
My sister had a baby girl and she was in 2nd or 3rd grade at the time. She used to love for me to pick her up at school and take her to lunch in the Camaro. I walked her down the isle three years ago and she now has a one year old boy. That makes me feel really old!!!
Great picture Dennis.

It took me about 5 minutes to compose myself after opening this thread! I didn't even read it.... just started laughing!! LOL!
I'm really sorry.... LOL!!!! No offense meant. LOL!!!

Were afro's really IN then? I was starting Senior year, had hair down to my back, drove a '71 Duster (with a huge Iron Cross painted on the trunk lid), attended every heavy metal and classic rock concert I could get tickets to, and was partying enough to choke an elephant.

Don't remember much though..... http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

1980... second year of Junior College taking general ed classes and driving the biggest POS I've ever had... 1978 El Camino. Put on headers, intake and Carter on the 305 and it still was a slug.

Just broke up with my High School Sweet heart and was dating lots of women from the company I was working at. It was nice being 20 years old, single... no responsibities and living at home.

IF I ONLY KNEW THEN WHAT I KNOW TODAY!

I was still living at home with my parents. I miss thoses days... although my parents are still together and alive... I miss doing things with my mom and also having my dad yelling at me because I forgot to put his tools away.

Life was good in Los Angeles...lots of high paying factory jobs for those who choose not to go to school. We were building Fords and GM cars in the city, Huge ships at our local ports... and tires, steel and airplanes also.

Homes were being built by union labor... which meant that they free to play in as a kid during the weekends. Yup... we were a booming industrial nation back then...

I still love my town. Actually... the air is cleaner now than it was back then!

I was stationed at Treasure Island also. Was on the USS Kansas City based out of NAS Alameda. Went to dry dock at Bethlehem Steel, that's why they put us on the Island. Then had the commute from the Island thru Frisco to peir 70. (6 months prior I fried the 70 R/T Charger merging on the bay bridge).
I had a friend from Indiana that had a Harley stolen then. Wasn't you was it? http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

I'd post a pic if I could find one from the era. I know they're here somewhere, at the bottom of a big pile.

That was all hair in that picture. You should have seen what it was like when I dressed up a bit and picked it out. I never got the walk down though and hats were out of the question... Scott it's shorter now but just about as thick and only the slightest touch of recedding hair line... My dads in his 70's and radiation treetments for cancer a couple years back turned his hair gray but he didn't loose it!! Since the treetments are over he's back to a full head of hair and a lot of the color came back. I think I'm doing all right.

Never heard the Mr Kotter refrence before but that was a popular show back then... "Up your nose with a rubber hose" I was called "Weird Al" a few times though. Prior to the stash I was "Hendrex" can;t see my lips with the stash and not sure why tou can see my eyes (rare moment back then), a bit later with shorter hair and a bit more meat on my bones it was "Magnum PI".

Click that's a great shot, which one did you marry?

I was 10, parents just divorced and I moved to Colorado with Mom. I spent most of my time outdoors (boyscout and all) and was into dirtbikes and snowmobiles. I also started snowboarding that same year....it was nice to live there, we (all my friends) always went skiing, we all played on the same soccer team and spent alot of time in the 'Connential Divide' hiking- camping- fishing....being little survivalists.....

Not to mention being that age came with pretty much no responsibility.

Man... now everyone will know how old everyone else is! I was a freshman in highschool. I had just went to live with my dad the year before. I moved to a new school district my freshman year. Made a new best friend that year who is a friend to this day.

Was concerned with all the typical stuff a kid that age is: (Girls,Cars,Sports...did I mention girls? http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif ) Like was mentioned earlier, If I only knew then what I know today... Oh well, we can't go back and do it all again.

Yea Dennis, I remember the Welcome back Kotter show too! Guess that puts me in the over 30 crowd!

Take care,
Mark P.

Graduated high school that year. Driving a 67 camaro 250-6;i would have killed myself with anything bigger. It had a near perfect body and interior. I paid $600 for the car-hell you'll pay that for one GM quarter now. Some lady blew a red light and t-boned me. I went through three girlfriends with that car. Great times!

I was driving my 75 Plymouth past a black 69 Camaro parked in a driveway with Big-N-Little Cragars on it. It was on my way to school every day and I always looked at it as I drove by. 4" rims in front and 10" in back. I was realy drooling for that one. It had no plates and never moved for several weeks. One day I stopped and knocked on the door and asked about the car. The girl that answered the door said the car had been sold several months before but the new owner had never picked it up. She gave me his number and I negotiated a price. It did not run and I was told it had a blown clutch but I took it on sight alone. My mother towed me home with a rope tied to her Granada and I was in heaven! It needed a lot of work and I learned by trial and error.I knew nothing about repairing cars at that time but I knew I had to have that Camaro.

I am still working on it today. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

I just started my sophmore year in a catholic high school. My parents yanked me out of the Pennsylvania public school system
because I was "with the wrong crowd". Those people ended up being the best friends I ever made to this day and my parents still ask about them. Some are dead, some are in
jail, some are doctors, lawyers or carpet insallers, and me, I ended up a pretty nice guy, so maybe it worked, who knows. But there was just as much, if not more, crime, violence and drugs in catholic school
as there was in public school. John Lennon was assasinated, Pink Floyd and The Wall would pretty much put and end to Gilmore and Waters, and we were tying yellow ribbons on everything to support the Iran Hostage Crisis (444 days). My dream car was exactly like the one stingr69 just showed, right down to the color scheme. Nice car stingr!!! And, DjD, I never met you, but, hey man, nice fro, can ya dig it? (LOL)

Gotten discharged from The Navy in 1976, married at that time for 6 years to a girl who lived down the street from me in Iowa --- still married to her today - THERE IS A GOD!!!....otherwise, I'd be in jail or dead.

Have been working for a company since I was discharged - still working for the same company today.

Had hair to the shoulders, girls loved it cause a full head, wavy, and a full beard. The only thing one could see was my nose.

Had a $282/month mortgage payment on a 2000 sq. ft ranch, loan of $32,000. Moved from that house, but, now its worth $79K.

Had a wonderful 2 year old daughter in 1980, now she's through college, has a darn good job and engaged to a good man, now she's 24. I'm darn sure getting old.

Welcome Back Kotter was a good show. My wife had her '68 Plain Jane Camaro, 327-4 bbl, Saginaw 4-spd, 3.08 open 10-bolt, Le Mans blue with antenna on the rear quarter. Wished I never got rid of it, but, one never knows what the future holds.

14 years-old in 9th grade, Northridge Jr. High School. Riding my FMF bicycle during the week and the YZ125 on the weekend. Jumping my buddy's Honda-50 over the railroad tracks and having to fix the broken frame every week in metal shop. Had to be cool and wear Lighting Bolt and Ocean Pacific cloths and Vans tennis shoes. Bagged on the "punkers" who followed Devo. Bought beer for the first time on New Years Eve in this dumpy liquor store on the corner of Tampa and Roscoe. Had a boner for about 23 hours each day.

I also started plotting to get my mits on my sister's car, and it lives today as The Red Beast.

Yes that was a fun on ramp to get onto the Bay Bridge. 10 feet to get from 0 to 70 mph to get into the flow of traffic. Harley didn't have much trouble, but the Jimmy needed a lot of room. I'm really suprised that there weren't more accidents there. Had to love the toll plaza in the morning commute.

The Harley got stolen down at Lemoore in 1985 one night when I went up to San Francisco to move my girlfriend (now wife) down to Visalia. Chained to a tree. They chopped the tree down. All was ok, insurance gave me more than I paid for it and I went out and bought a new Jeep Wrangler.

I don't know what they did to TI, but I worked in Building 1 in the legal office. (Took care of my share of drug dealers and prostitutes then). Building 1's first floor was a pretty nice museum. Wonder what they did with all that junk. I haven't stayed up on Navy events since I got out other than occasionally watching JAG (Gag) on TV. I did hear that the Navy pretty much moved out of the Bay Area.

I do like that fro. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Mr. Kotter, er, I mean Dennis, Great thread, I was 23, married (to my 1st wife) and living in a one bed roon apt. in SF, Diamond Heights dist., Paid $193.00 per month and that included utilities! Had a great view of San Fran from my living room. Working as a apprentice engineer and going to school 2 nights a week for my journeymens card. Just sold my 67 Camaro (Dummy) and bought a brand new 81 RX-7 which I still have today. (anyone want to buy it). Boy those were the days, gas was only about .50 per gallon, Was in shape, No kids, beer was only 2 bucks a sixpack. Spent some time on the CB and sideband radio. My handle was "Rusty Nuts". Mike

Cool stories...Wish I had a great story too, But I was just born in september of 79. Wouldn't start to like cars until I was about 4 and got to ride in my 16 year old uncles red 1981 firebird(could explain my love for second gens). Would be more then ten years after that before I even started to learn about cars...

I also remember my grandfathers 1979 Trans Am...I loved the car with the big bird on the hood http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

In 1980 I was going to Dekalb Community College in Stone Mtn, Ga. I was working part time at a Amoco staion for gas money for my 1969 Camaro SS. The Camaro was primer gray with a 396/375 in it. I was running a ZL1 cam and 4.88 gears. I used to cruise up and down Memorial Drive on the weekends sometimes with a hood on sometimes without.... http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

I was 21!!! I was raising hell in my 73 Camaro then. My ex-husband and I were living together, and he wasn't far off making me sell the car. "Too much work and too much power for you!" was what he said. Still had hair down to my ass, was skinny, and could party with the best of them! Saw some killer concerts! I had just got my real estate license and was working for myself, as was the Ex. Money was pretty good for a couple of kids, and we had a blast! It was the time of "Road Trip" and we would take off for a 4 hour drive to the beach late at night on a moments notice. Life was good and a lot of fun back then. Life still is fun, but it's fun to reminice a little too!

Now we know what happens to Kelso from the 70s show. (jk. you look just like him)

1980 I was in 5th grade, and had just seen the pictures of the 69 Camaro in my Dads 69 Service Manual. I decided then I was going to have one, and five years later I did. I still have it.

Lets see, 1980. Hmmm. I can remember in Feb., I was on the USS(Man, what was the name of that ship?)fishing out all the cubans that were leaving cuba to the US(remember all that?). I had NO hair, I missed the Heart concert, but by then, I had 5 months left of my enlistment with Uncle Sam and the Marine Corps. I was cruising around the country side in my black 77 Trans Am, cause there were no chicks to be found in beautiful Jacksonville N.C., arm pit of the USA. I hated that place. I got out of the service and went back to Alaska, where I stayed until 2001. And am back in the Carolinas again, go figure? http://www.camaros.net/forum/rolleyes.gif

Let's see . . . in 1980 I would have been in seventh or eighth grade - shooting spitwads and teasing girls. We used to talk about seeing "a rumble" at the local high school, but never saw anything other than an occasional group of slobs sitting around drinking beer.

Little League baseball (I think they called it "Colt" at that age), full contact football without pads in my backyard with the neighbor hood kids, and coolest of all . . . cruising in my Dad's Canary Yellow '77 Ford LTD station wagon http://www.camaros.net/forum/rolleyes.gif

ps. DjD - my parents used to warn me to stay away from people that looked like you http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif you know, drugs and all . . . That's a great pic!

Married Aug 2 1980, going to graduate school taking 30-33 hours per trimester and stressed to the max. Went to Annie's Santa Fe restaurant with fellow students at Banister mall in So. KC on Fridays for .50 all you could eat taco's. Ate a lot of macaroni and cheese(the cheap kind), cabbage soup and prayed there was enough money left at the end of the month. Drove a 67 Camaro Convertible(now under restoration) back and forth to school and my first KZ900 motorcycle was stolen. Lived in a one bedroom apartment that rented for 265.00 per month and lived below a women that was either vaccumning or entertaining and moaning and screaming http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif, yup that's right.

Hey no1dc, did you ever go to the Lobster Pot in Kansas City at the old Union Station? I lived in Topeka back then and we'd drive all the way there for all you can eat seafood. It was the best. I remember Anni's Sante Fe too. After my wife and I got married (1984) we lived pretty close to Bannister.

In 1980 I was in the Chicago area finishing 8th grade and headed for High School in the fall. This was the about the time I figured out that girls were much more interesting then they were last year...I also started to care more about cool cars since in less than 2 years I would be taking driver's ed!

I also remember really hating the velour shirts that my mother bought for me! I always asked for concert t-sirts or baseball style t's but had to scrounge them up on my own.

The best thing though was that the disco era had begun to die, finally! Anybody remember Steve Dahl and the disco record demolition at Comisky park? What a riot http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif!

Hmmm 1980... I was 13 and like Dennis was saying, the Olympics were going on, Mt St. Helens was spewing ash all over the place. I was in the back of the Vista Cruiser, we were leaving my Grandpas apple ranch in eastern Washington (Yakima). The ash was coming down like crazy! Many cars were stranded on the sides of the freeway 'cause the ash was getting sucked into the carbs. I think the U.S. must have done great in those Olympics, because McDonalds had a scratch n win game...I must have ate my weight in Big macs that summer bleck bleck! My oldest brother had a roadrunner, middle brother had a chevelle, and older sister had a valiant. The Valiant had a "loose" backseat, and when she slammed the brakes the seat would slide forward and pin me against the tranny tunnel!
Dennis, I think your pick looks more like Ron Jeremy or something (atta boy)

I turned six years old in 1980! The big first grader. I remember my teachers talking about Mt. St. Helens and my aunt brought us a bottle of ash. My hot rod back then was a big wheel! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif But at least I could slide it sideways without a nasty citation from the law. "Look at me! I'm like Beau and Luke!"

I was probably being potty trained in 1980 as I was only 3 years old. From what my parents tell me I was a handfull, taking lug nuts off my dads utility trailer, putting the garden hose down into the gas tank of his pinto and turning on the water. Thoose where the days.
