The other day i was driving and my engine started making a knocking noise. I thought it was a bent pushrod or broken rocker, but when i took them out, they looked ok. WHat else could it be? I hope it isnt a spun bearing. By the way this was in my (307 cutlass) if that makes a difference. I appreciate the help

You might want to tell us what you were doing when this knock started to occur. I would guess since you decided it was valve train related that there was a sustained high RPM condition immediately preceding the knocking. Any oil pressure problems at the same time? Any work done recently? Manual or automatic transmission? (flywheel bolts tight?) Can you tell where in the engine the knock is coming from, top, bottom center? The more info you provide the better your chances are of getting the right answer. As stated you might as well as an accountant (apologies to any accountants on the site) what the problem is.

It is an automatic trans, no work done, no loss of oil pressure when it happened either. I cant tell where it is coming from, thanks.

Check your dampner bolt and pulley bolts. Put it back together, fire it up and grab a long screw driver (if you don't have a stethascope <sp> ) and have listen. Put the pointed end of the screw driver toward the engine and the handle end to your ear (just in case you didn't know). This will help you pinpoint where the noise is coming from. If your oil pressure didn't drop I doubt you have a bad bearing. Is it a tick or a knock? Good Luck

I have heard a fuel pump rod ticking before because it was worn

I thought this would help if you had determined it wasnt a bearing knock

Use your 'screwdriver stethescope' on the water pump. Is it that far foreward? I've heard pumps make wierd noises when the bearing goes bad.

Nope, tried the screw driver thing, it is coming from the bottom, rerar, near the oilpan, flywheel area. It is sounding more like a metal screech a little, so i dont think it could be coming from inside the engine, it has to be something on the outside. I checked the flywheel to converter bolts and they are all fine. I dont know what it is
