What is the real horsepower of a 69 302.
Ive been told that it isn't 290 but more in
the upper 300 range. Chevy just said 290 for
insurance reasons, so I was told. Thanks for
any help.

Not sure which program I was watching on TV, but about 2 weeks ago they were talking about the '69 Z28 being factory rated at 290 hp. But they said that figure was VERY underated for insurance purposes, that it was more like 390hp!

According to a inter department GM document dated June 5, 1967, a Z28 service pack capable of delivering 448 hp will deliver 432 hp in full vehicle dress. The document further qualifies the test conditions using the plenum air, headers, jet changes and spark timing. Since this was the first year Z/28, the following years in 68 & 69 could be higher with some of the changes for those years. The document can be found at: http://1967z28.com/tech-info/Documentation/documentation.htm
Just click on the service pack document. Note: The document also points out the corrected number is 403 HP.

Interesting that even the corrected HP number (403HP) is still way over others experience. I would also guess that the same engine would read differently from one dyno to the next. But the 400 does seem much higher than others' tests.

I know this is a little out of line on this post, but I recall a friend of mine had a bone stock marina blue 66 duce coupe with a 327/350 hp L79 engine, M21 and (I think) 3.73's w/posi-trac. Man did he have fun playing with the "big boys".
It was always neat to watch him start about three blocks away and row through the gears. The front would come up and the whole car would kinda shudder and then take off like a "stripped a-- ape". I know it's not a modern suspended car now, and it didn't hook up the best, but it sure was great back in 67. pdq67

David,
In fact it's the car I wanted to order but by the time my mom convinced me that I had a big enough down payment (she had to co-sign on the loan) the 66 model year was over and the L79 327 was no more. Thats when I ordered my 67 camaro optioned the way I wanted it. pdq67
