pull it with trans..easier because reinstallation is tough try to line up trans to engine, especially in a 3rd Gen Camaro. the cross member comes super easy.

HI

I would just pull the motor, I did this on my 3rd gen, without any problem, and it was my first swap.

one reason it would be dificult on a 3rd gen to pull them both together is when u yank the motor, you have to put the engine hoist on the side of the car, you cannot do it from the front, becuz the hoist will not reach.
At least, my hoist wouldnt reach, and it was a big hoist.
Its not that difficult to line the motor to the trans.
I know most people will say to line up the trans to the engine when doing this.
However, it is very hard to do this on a 3rd gen, I just go for the motor mounts, and worry about lineing the trans up after the motor is bolted in.
Also, if only pulling the engine, you can do it without removing the radiator/condensor, and you dont have to remove any accesories(except the a/c compressor)

I pulled the motor and trans in an 84 Z28 several times and (especially with the 5 speed in a Z28) it's easier to pull the motor and tranny together. With it out of the car you can be sure that the clutch is aligned to the pilot bearing so the tranny input shaft will slide into position the first time - you can see a whole lot better when its not under the car. Never had any trouble getting the hoist in from the front.

I have always preferred to pull both as a unit, using a "tilter" on the hoist with four chains; have done this six or seven times in the last few years, and with a "tilter", have done it solo, with no helpers required - nothing to it. Mine was made by "Trans-Dapt", got it from Summit about five years ago for about $60.00. Getting an input shaft lined up and the tranny seated properly is a lot easier out of the car.

Pull just the motor by itself. On the 85 Camaro you don't have to even unbolt the hood to get the motor out. you don't have to remove the radiator or condesor just unbolt the a/c compressor from the motor. Pull the three torque converter bolts and leave the tranny there. It's a mess when trying to pull the tranny because it's connected to the rearend with the torque arm. if tou disconnect the torque arm from the tranny the rearend wants to rotate and flop around.
