View Full Version : overdrive not working
Culater Jul 21st, 01, 04:03 PM Need some help. Just got this car and I can't find where the electical hook up for the tranny is. The previous owner wrecked out most of the wiring harness and what is left isn't hooked up. I'm going nutts trying to find where the electrical connection for the tranny is. The trans works great except it won't go into overdrive. I can see from my tech book and a gm ecm book there is a electrical connection to the tranny, but it doesn't tell you where it is. HELP please.
DjD Jul 21st, 01, 04:17 PM Well it might help if you tell us just a little something about your car. What year would be a good start!! http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
Culater Jul 21st, 01, 04:21 PM OOps, guess that might help a little, as you can see my mind isn't where it should be at this point. I've had my head under the hood all day trying to trace wiring and finding more and more that is not conected to a darn thing. This is 84 Trans Am to be exact with the 305 HO and auto tranny.
Glenn Jul 21st, 01, 05:40 PM If you are talking no overdrive, you have an internal tran's problem.Overdrive is not electrically operated,it's done by the valvebody. The wiring to the tran's is for the lockup torque converter,it get's complicated in a hurry with brake and vacum switch's.You would be better served by getting an electrical diagram. Most shop's with alldata could print it out for a small fee.

The lockup connector is on the drivers side of the tranny, near the speedo cable output. It is plugged in from the top.
Glenn is correct about the tranny . It has 4 forward speeds and then the torque converter lockup drops cruise RPM another 300rpm. Which is not working?

Culater Jul 21st, 01, 06:36 PM As far as I can tell the transmission only shifts three gears. Does all three just fine in fact. I know it's not shifting into fourth due to I'm in the same gear starting around 40-45 mph. ie. at 65mph I'm running just below 4K rpm's. So, from what your saying I've got bigger headaches than just wiring problems.
cnred84 Jul 21st, 01, 08:48 PM mabey that is why all of the wiring is messed up. i would say that it could be a different tranny than stock. mabey he put in a th350 or 400 and it realy is only shifting three times because it is a 3 speed. just a thought i did it in my 84 so why couldnt someone else??

Culater Jul 22nd, 01, 07:41 AM Okay, if he did a tranny swap how would I be able to id this tranny to find out what it is? I'm a ford guy before now, so I'm new to chevy stuff. Thanks for all your help so far guys. If he did swap the tranny does this new one have a lock up also or ??
lnjstreetrods Jul 24th, 01, 07:36 PM Culater,
If the tranny is shifting 3 tines it is a 4 spd, because the 3 spd only shifts twice.
You start off in 1st, so the first shift is to second, the second shift is to 3rd, and the 3rd shift is to 4th. Maybe the change has been in the rear end gears. Try going 50 or so with the shifter in 4th or OD, and move it down one gear, if you are not in 4th nothing will change, if it down shifts you are in 4th.
This car should have a 700R4, and that means that there is a 4 wire connector on the drivers side, just behind the shifter linkage looking up at the floor of the car.
You can get a afer market lockup kit, and not worry about the mess on the car.
CAUTION!!!
Do Not do a hot hard trip on this tranny until you get the LU working. The rear planetary gets its oil through the lockup circuit in 4th gear, so there is very little to no oil to the rear in 4th. It will melt down!!!!

rick Jul 25th, 01, 03:43 PM You should be able to tell which tranny you have, by the shape of the pan. Go here: http://links.chevelles.net/links/WorkShop/ID_Your_Chevelle_Parts/ and then go down to the Transmission Identification & Decoding link. That should help you some.

Culater Jul 29th, 01, 09:09 PM Thank you guys so much for your help. This guy did change out the transmission to the TH350. Whewwww, deep sigh now that I know that I don't have a tranny problem. Just need to fix that rear tranny support. Again thanks for all those that replied
