Is anyone familiar with the 4L80E transmission? It's supposed to be the aautomatic overdrive version of the th400. I have never heard of one but am interested in it for the 4th gear.

As I remember them, they were/maybe are still, used behind 454 engine'd middle weight and bigger trucks, and pickups/duallies.

I do remember that they are much larger than the TH700R4, and are considered to be pure beef compared to the 700.

Might try to find one of these pickups and get under, look and tape measure it.

I agree with Ingnitionman. I also believe the are computer controlled. That may be the "E" designation.

Yeah, I looked into this when I got my 67. You need a harness for this puppy and its much overkill unless you're pushing well in excess of 500 lbs ft. Last year, when I checked the harness ( to run this on a non ECM motor)it was $800 http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif I'm sure this has been halved by more products/competition.

Curious to see what I-Man measures these at. They are much bigger than a 400, both in length and girth. At least by eye.

No, not me to measure, I was suggesting 69er do the measuring. I'm way too old and senile to crawl under a truck unless there's either money or a nice girl under there.

Gene C is correct about the 4L80E being bigger.

What GM did to the TH350 was added an overdrive gear and called it the TH700R4. This was designated as that style until the late 80's and then they changed the name to the 4L60. After they changed to OBDI-2, they computer controlled the transmission and added the "E" suffix.

They did the same to the TH400, only GM didn't add the overdrive gear until the late 80's and was designated 4L80 with the same change as the 4L60 when they became computer controlled.

You can find the 4L80/4L80E in the heavy 3/4t and 1 ton pickups, with either the 350 or the 454 engine. The light 3/4t (sorry, forgot the rpo code between hvy & lt 3/4t p/u's, but the hvy 3/4t has 8 lugs and the lt has only 6) and the 1/2t pickups as well as many passanger cars had the 4L60/4L60E.

How much bigger is the 4L80 than a TH400(size wise), is it computer controlled and if not, then what years did they use them before the 4L80E. Youre help has been appreciated. Thanks.

I believe GM introduced the "E" series transmissions in 93, but could be mistaken. (My 94 1/2t is the 4L60E, but my 89 f-bird is a 4L60 aka 700R4)

The 4L80 is going to be physically longer due to the extra gear, how much, I don't know. Try a trany shop in your area and see if they could give you the specifics. You might also try someone like B&M or Jet, I believe they also sell a 4L80 for racing.

Now that I think about it and my GM parts days are a little fuzzy, but I don't think GM offered the 4L80 in a non-computer controlled version. When I get back to work, I'll look at the parts books and see what was offered
