I just bought a 67 with a 327. I know it is not the original engine, but appears to be a dealer service replacement. But what surprised me is the big 'ol oil canister where a spin-on disposable should be.
Was this original? How do I change the filter? Where can I get filters? Or can I convert to use regular disposable filters? Many thanks!

Ken67SSRS if you so choose to keep the canister type configeration the replacement filter is ready available at your local parts store but, if you want to go with the screw on type. WIX make an adapter that goes in the place of the current setup and will allow you to use conventional filter. Just ask for it at the parts counter. Hope this helps.

I have one too!, I stuck with mine untill the 11.99 filter element price tag made me say "whoah!" then I invested in the Mr. Gasket filter conversion kit (* 10.99 ) accespts the Phram PH3 or any other kind of filter (it gives you a list) not to mention the ease of a screw on filter, I hate draining the Can to get to the element. you get SO dirty. ! any local parts store should have it, I think that all chevy SB's had these filter elements prior to 68 where they went with the screw ons.

FYI! Mr. Gasket has pulled the conversion kit for the old to new type filters as I have recently put together two pre 68 engines and to resort to the WIX brand.

If you just need a filter, WIX makes the element: part #51143 and they throw in a canister gasket also. I paid about $5.00 from a local parts distributor. The spin on adapters are ok, but I like the original look of the canister.
