guys

just bought my 67 396. its the original block and its bored 60 over. im going to restore the car completely. ive heard the max bore on a 396 is 60 over. so what can i do to clean the engine up? i want to do it right and have something completely reliable that will last for years.

can i put sleeves in it? to bring it back to stock bore? what is the max bore for a 67 396? im sorry if this is obvious... brand new to this.

any help on this would be appriciated. by the way, im going to move to san jose CA in jan 2002.
anybody know some good machinists there?

thanks guys

I know of a few good machine shops in San Jose. What part of San Jose do you plan to move to? You should also talk to DJD on this BB he has had some work done on his camaro and would prob. have some shops to recommend.

I believe you can go more than 60 over but can't remember how much right now

ill be working in mountain view and living just a little south of los gatos. but im willing to go anywhere to get the job done right.

as far as the block itself, i dont want to go to the extreme. like i said, i want something that will be reliable. this is the matching block so i want to keep it safe.

anything about sleeves?

Welcome to the neighborhood!! I'm by no means an expert on engine sleeving but I believe you'll find it being done to keep a numbers matching car together. Also someone with a very rare, expensive mill might do it to keep it alive.

I would guess it's a bit on the expensive side and finding a good core would save you money. I don't think durability is an issue...

When you say south of Los Gatos is that along the 85 before the 101 or a bit further toward Morgan Hill?

well this is a matching numbers big block with the POP and all that and im just a young punk engineer so im willing to spend the money to keep that block in that car.

hopefully the block is good. i just bought it so i have no idea what the engine is really like.

i got a house with three of my friends out there and i think they said the house is on blossom hill between oakridge mall and los gatos, but im not sure yet...

got a friend in mo hill though... i love it down there. reminds me a little of home..away from the city a bit.

got any good machinists out there though? i figure ill get the car out there in march or april and id like to at least start talking to some good reputable shops as soon as possible.

thanks

Give Vic at Victory Machine a call when you are ready. His hourly rare is a bit high but he backs his shops work 1000%!! They are very close to your house as well... The number is 408 266-7570.

If the block is in good shape, you may be able to just have it honed. Then you wouldn't have to mess with sleeves or anything.

Have a good shop measure the bores and sonic-test them; that'll tell you exactly what you need to do, and how much meat is still there. Sleeving all the holes in a BB is $800-$1,200, probably not worth it if the block is run out.

i could understand it might not be worth it on another block.

but this being the original block, i dont think that it terribly unreasonable considering ill put way more than that in any engine i build... and no matter what block i use, ill have to clean it up a little bit.

as long as durability of the engine isnt affected, id rather spend the money to keep the original block in the car.

thanks for all you guys' inputs!

When your finally out here in San Jose you might want to join the NOR-CAL camaro club. Its a good way to meet a bunch of camaro owners from the bay area.

I ran the p*ss out of a 60 over 396 2bolt in my Super Street car. Had no problems at all. If it will hone use it. If you have problems give me an Email when you get here I have a 66 std bore block that is in the way.
