Does anyone know the correct or best shifter handle to use with the tremec tko for my 67 camaro?. After grenading my 4-speed saginaw, it is time for a change.
Thanks, Kitt

I dunno if it will fit, but I installed a tranny and a B&M Ripper Shifter in my buddies 83 Z28 5spd, and the ultra short throw was the coolest, most solid shifts Id ever done! The only thing missing was a T-handle.... but, I'd call up or email them and see if it'll fit. He hasn't had any problems yet(18 months), but beleive me, this guy can destroy (finding weaknesses, he calls it)a car quickly, and the shifter and new tranny have held up beautifully.

There's a lot of "ifs" in your question.

If you purchase the TKO from Fortes and use his adjustable shifter you can only use the OEM short-throw Tremec shifter. The Tremec shifter system is a three-part deal, the shifter mounting plate that bolts onto the top of the transmission, the shifter mechanism that bolts to the top of the mounting plate, and the shifter handle that bolts to the mechanism. Fortes makes a new mounting plate that moves the shifter mechanism forward to fit the stock console hole. If you use this you cannot use an aftermarket shifter. The aftermarket parts are made of aluminum and incorporate both the mounting plate and shifter mechanism together. In this case you cannot move the shifter forward. The OEM short-throw TKO shifter is quite adequate.

If you are talking about the shifter handle any Hurst shifter handle will fit. The Hurst catalog has drawings of the different shapes and sizes that are available.

Carl is right on. I've got a 3550 from Fortes with the 1st gen shifter and it fit the console and stock shifter plate after I moved the console back about an inch which you can't notice.

I use the stock "slider" with an inexpensive boot underneath.

I am still using a Hurst shift handle that came off a M2X Muncie type set-up and it is a little long as it mounts to the shifter stub which extends just slightly above the shifter plate. I want to get a shorter one but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Shifter throws are short and sweet so the shifter stays kind of in the back right corner of the shifter plate. The 5th/Rev gate gets real close to the right side of the shifter plate opening, but it fits.

Only negative from an astetic standpoint is the upper bolt of where the handle attaches to the stub is visitble as it is above the shifter plate in the console. Lower one is covered by the boot.

Haven't driven it much so far but I like the tranny. I'm running 3:08 gears and 245/60R-15 tires and so far feels OK.

Sorry my question was vague, I planned to keep the console and it looks like I probably am going to buy it from Forte's. Does he carry that short handle or do you have to order it out of a catalog?
I really appreciate all the replies you guys have given me. THANKS

Forte's really not too hip on shifter handles.

The best way to determine what you need would be to install the transmission, sit in the seat, and place your hand where you would like the shifer ball to be. Take a few measurements and compare to those listed in the Hurst catalog. Any speed shop or catalog parts distributor will carry Hurst products.

For me, an 8" high 3" rearward curve handle worked fine. Hurst P/N 538-0015.

Carl,

Reading this post the other day got me thinking about buying a new handle so I dug out my Hurst catalog last night. I need to measure mine to see what I got but glad to hear you like the 538-0015. OK that is doesn't have any lean towards the driver?

The other one I was thinking about was the 538-8571 but it is missing dimension in the catalog. And I'm assuming it leans towards and not away fron the driver.

Mark,

My Hurst catalog is around here somewhere under the pile of crap on my desk that drives my wife nuts. I just can't find it!

The handle seems fine without the sideways bend. If in doubt you can cut and bend your current handle and test fit.

Carl,

Our wives must be similar. I can tell when my piles of catalogs, Super Chevy and Chevy High Performance mags around my desk and bed have reached the limit as I will find them piled on my pillow with the subtle "go through these or they are going in the trash" message.

Actually, she is a trooper who has been extremely patient the last 3 years. She has a little "gear head" in her though as she drives probably one of very few Volvo V70 wagons.....with a 5-Speed.
