at what point should i start thinking about rebuilding an engine? should i wait till faileur? or miles?

If you're not a numbers guy, have you considered building another motor while the one you have still lives? If you do it through an engine builder they'll likely give you some money on your old engine as a core fee. This way you won't be down for weeks or months.
