It's time to dump the powerslug. Please feel free to give me the low down on your auto trannys. How was the install? Are you happy with it? Is a four speed as strong as the three?

I will be running a 300 horse 327 with 3.08's.

At your horsepower level, a 700R would work fine. And No, the four speeds are not as strong as the three speeds in stock form.

Also would suggest 3.55 gears or even 3.73's with 700R. A relatively stock 700R should work fine. The cost of this setup (relatively stock) with install is going to be in the 1400-1500 dollar range so if cost is a consideration then the three speeds are much less (LT 1000 installed).

I'll pay the price if the tranny will hold up and perform. I've heard that pre 87 700r's are crap. Should I watch out for certain years?
Is the boost in performance and economy worth the cost, or is a th350 comperable.

I put in a TH350 and it is a lot of fun. Then I later upgraded my rear to a 3.73 gear.... also fun. What isn't fun is turning 65mph at 3000rpm. If I had it to do over again, I would have gone with a TH200-4R. I like the ratios better than the 700. Now that I have my TH350 though, I love it... eventually I will bolt a Gear Vendors under/overdrive to the back of it and have myself a 6 speed semi-auto overdrive trans. That will be even more fun I hope.

Have you thought about a 200 4r it is a bolt in. I just picked up a nice one and am going to give it a try. Do a search on 200 4r there is a ton of info in the site.

Well with a TURBO 400 and my BB I get 7-8MPG and with the 700R, I was getting 12-13MPG (highway driving) on Power Tour. You might want to give Larry a call @ 817-207-0707. He is a the guru at this along with Bruce (WE4)at Performance Transmissions.

Oger's and boodlefoof's points are well taken, the 200R does have a better internal gear ratio compared to the 700R. With either and 3.73 gears you would be taching around 2400RPM @ 70-75 MPH.

Boy, I could get better mileage, faster acceleration and softer idle wit a 200-r4? Do you need to get electronics for a lockup converter? I might have to explore this for the Nova.

Thanks for the info.

I don't know specifically on the 200R but on the 700R with certain year models you can get it to hydralically lockup without the electronics being required.

Larry at 817-207-0707 or Bruce @ Performance Transmissions would be the ones to ask if you needed the exact info.

on the 700r4 you need to look at the valve body to see if it has the bore for the hyd.valve.I think they changed this in 90,91 but am not sure!the electric lock up is not hard to do,I purchased a oil pressure valve from Fairbanks racing in florida and it screws into the 4th gear pressure check port on the pass.side of trans and hooks to the overdrive plug on driver side, then all you have to do is hook up a toggle switch and give it 12V.you can run it over a switch on the brake pedal because you can feel it start to stutter at low speeds.I cut mine on/off manually (it makes the passingers wonder what you are doing)It feels like a 5th gear when I cut it on!I also put a controll light on the dash so i dont forget it, its wired to constant 12v.

its no problem, I just did it with my 69 camero, put in a rebuilt TH350 I bought for $650, fit right in, but I had to buy a conversion bracket for the shifter(caution the kit from paddock doesn't provide for the steering wheel lock attachment). You'll also have to provide for the new vaccum line. The fluid lines and shifter worked fine though. And it runs great, shifts rather firmly, will spin the tires after each shift. I have a 350 motor and 3.73 rear. Its not my daily driver so I doesn't bother me to not have a numerically lower top gear, but I can see how having something less then 1.0 would be nice.
